My R-Tech 250 is still going strong, but unfortunately I am not.
Sorry to hear thatMy R-Tech 250 is still going strong, but unfortunately I am not.
Fingers crossed you continue to improve. What a nightmare few yearsAt the time of the 180th roll of wire post in this thread I had just been diagnosed with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney disease.
This all came about from me setting fire to my overalls on a welding job in a cattle shed and burning my leg. The fluid made huge blisters where I was burnt and then it just kept on coming.
Apparently I'd probably had the beginnings of kidney failure 2 years previous to this accident and I just didn't know it.
The burns highlighted the Proteinuria and the nephrotic syndrome I had. Unfortunately that it is when I started to retain fluid and at my worst 16 months ago I was holding in the region of 40 litres/kgs of retained fluid I was now a 17½ stone man in a 12 stone man's body!
All this retained fluid had become stagnant and infected and it was poisoning me. The Cellulitis in my arms and legs was now ulcerating because the skin was stretched too far and these wounds became very badly infected and I required daily dressing changes at either to my local surgery (on the next road) or they sent a nurse to see me at home.
During mid May 2020 I was advised that my situation was now a terminal condition mainly due to me being unsuitable for either Dialysis or a kidney transplant and I was advised to begin Palliative counselling prior to palliative care.
On Friday the 12th of June 2020 my renal consultant contacted me urgently and even though I was only just into CKD Stage 5 and entering a serious downward spiralling condition I was asked to participate in a pharmaceutical trial.
An American drug company was trying to get a cancer drug already approved for cancer patients in the UK and EU approved for use on Kidney patients.... for which it was already approved in the USA. I was told in no uncertain terms that they wanted a terminal kidney patient to take the drug and be monitored for a set of baselines. I was the ideal candidate and in the required age group. I accepted because I had nothing to lose and more importantly the data obtained from me would help others in the medium to long term.
On Tuesday the 16th of June: the first day of the new coarse fishing season and the day I had chosen for my last ever fishing trip I began the infusion therapy. 6 hours once a month sat on my **** in a chair with a canula in my arm receiving first 100ml of liquid paracetamol and 200ml saline wash, then 100ml of anti histamine and 200ml plain water wash, then 100 ml of an anti emetic and 200ml plain water wash, then 100ml of an antibiotic and 100ml plain water wash, then 100ml of the main pharmaceutical event and then 2 X 100ml plain water washes 15 minutes apart. This took me 400ml over the restricted 1000ml daily fluid intake regime I was on and I was not allowed to drink anything for a 30-36 hour period when receiving the infusions: do you know how difficult deliberately not drinking is‽
There were also side effects from the main event including headaches, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea and all at the same time!
By the Autumn I had gone from only having weeks to live, to being well enough to see my adopted daughter and her 5 year old son as the country's lockdown restrictions were lifted.
By Christmas I was beginning to feel better and more importantly the diuretics were beginning to work properly and I had gone from taking both oral warfarin and a self injected dose of 15,000 units of Sodium Dalteparin, which were needed to thin the blood and reduce the extremely high blood pressure caused by the fluid retention build up around my heart and lungs. By now I was no longer going into shock because of the high blood pressure. My body going into shock saved my life on more than one occasion because my blood pressure was way up into fatal heart attack and stroke territory.
Since new Year I have shed 29 litres/kg of retained fluid by just ******* it away and I currently only have 11 litres/kg to go before the consultants will be happy with my condition and I can reduce my medications even further.
However, this was all going on during the pandemic lockdown and my business was doing nothing because of this and the UK-European situation: 50-60% of my pre-pandemic business was exports to the EU. In April 21 I made my adopted daughter a garden gate, you can see this in the What have you made today thread on these forum boards. This was the first time I'd used my Mig welder in I think 15 months and today I am making a large framed hand barrow from M/S ERW tubing to transport hot food from the kitchens to the dinning area of Treehouse festival here in Norfolk that begins on Monday.
Currently my score with my R-Tech 250 Mig welder is Roll №181 of 15kg X 0.8mm A18 wire.
It's still less than 2 years since all this beganFingers crossed you continue to improve. What a nightmare few years
Blimey over lockdown I got fat, fed up and jacked in work (hopefully for good). It's still less than 2 years since all this began
While I was ill and during the lockdown like almost everyone else I've watched far too much TV.
I finished writing my first novel and secured a publishing deal and publishing date for it; 28th of April 2022.
Yes, it is still an extended period until then, but that will be the 80th anniversary of an actual WW2 event that I have used to close this semi true story I have written around the drunken ramblings my Great Uncle Joseph told to me when I was a teenager in the 1970s.
I started writing my second novel in the series revolving around my Great Uncle and his nefarious adventures and escapades.
I won a place in the top 25 of the BBC's Local Radio National Lockdown writing competition.
I tidied up and submitted My Bottle Rocket Story It was one of three chosen to represent BBC Radio Norfolk and was read out to the nation on a Saturday evening when all the BBC local radio stations came together.
I helped the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Renal Unit write a Kidney Patient's renal care handbook. I wrote all the recipes in the section for the cooking at home for renal patients.
I tried to learn playing my Bodhran drum, tambourine, penny whistle and descant recorder and 'er-in-doors banished me to the bottom of garden for the duration ..... and even after many hours I still can't play a proper set of notes on any of them.
I wrote a Dragon story and then attempted to turn it into a continuous 25 metre long Bayeux tapestry type acrylic paint and inks on (a roll of plotter) paper artwork ..... this is still a work in progress.
I rekindled an affair with airbrushing and wood carving both of which I have not done in 40 years.
I won a quadcopter drone in one of these Facebook like, share and postscamscompetitions and I actually got it, so I took the CAA drone and RC aircraft operator/pilots test and Rob (SIL) and Isaac (grandson) and I have a right laugh on the park with it as it chases Isaac around the BMX track, etc.
I got challenged by a friend to eat a different dinner everyday during the 28 days of February.
Today is day 182 of this project and we are closing it tomorrow after not repeating a daily main meal in 183 days or ½ a year.

I finished the back to bare plaster walls and concrete floor bathroom refurbishment. It only took me three years and now she wants me to repaint the walls and ceiling; I started the prep-work yesterday.
I continued my online support and fund raising for the Sea Palling Independent Lifeboat.
Last month I resurrected "Gareth's Glorious Gala Games" after mothballing them and destroying all but one game four years ago.
These were large homemade games I loaned out Free Of Charge to associations, charities, church groups, clubs, scouts, guides, youth groups and schools, etc. for their fund raisers. Alas, freeloaders saying they were charities and taking them for private parties and a certain local wedding organiser saying they were for a fund raiser and then hiring them out at a friends wedding we were invited to disenchanted me, so one weekend in a rage I smashed up and burnt my splat the rat, hoopla, ring the bulls and weather map game.
My wheel of fortune was stolen from a Police station open day fete and I kept my giant table skittles. In the last couple weeks I have started making new hoopla, ring the bulls, Aunt Sally, Shoot the moon and table top Kegeln: a German 9 pin bowling game.
Brilliant, keeping busy and having something to get out of bed for makes all the differenceIt's still less than 2 years since all this began
