Don't waste money on cheap hand saws they dull quickly and are just hard work
Silky was always the go to ... stay sharp and cut fast and clean
sandvik was my go too folding saw
Re sealing cuts ... wound treatments and preservatives actually inhibit or prevent the tree's natural healing process and cause more problems than they solve. There are a few exceptions from what I recall... but my cert arb was done a long time ago and I haven't kept current

Disagree about silky. Good quality steel is no secret, and Silky dont appear to make a larger/coarser climbing saw. Yes some cheap saws are bad.
While I say Silky, what I use in my kit are these. I cant tell the difference in cutting. Both are slow when cutting bigger branches, say 6". The four tree teams I worked in all use Stihl chainsaws and Silky handsaws only, so I have used the real thing to compare against.
Only annoyance is the scabbard has the open bit but that was instantly fixed with duct tape to stop any chance of rope getting caught in there.
I tried using it today, seems to be a kind of latex type stuff.
Perhaps I'll try a few cuts and seal the central 3/4 of diameter leaving the cambium clean to calous over.
I imagine where it is sealed, it will still calous around it... I will find out!
The trees owner seems happy for me to experiment with it so will leave some natural cuts to compare with, and as its near me I can check up on it.

Iirc the book you want is A new tree biology by Shigo ... it was the bible probably outdated now
Wound sealers have been shown to be worse than leaving the bare cut for most species iirc ... although it seals the cut it inhibits callous growth. As I recall it was suggested that it may be useful if silver leaf is evident in nearby trees
Hopefully someone more current can advise if that has changed or products improved

Cutting edge Trojan is a good pruning saw.
Silky zubat is hard to beat, I started buying the cutting edge when silky prices went stupid. Only thing I don't like about the cutting edge is the handle.
Stops that section from breathing, which will trap moisture and lead to fungi and other infections. A problem with trees is they don't heal so much as they cover damage with time they will reorder their structure to strengthen the damaged section. (species dependent some rot too quickly) but essentially any larger wounds are always their. Likewise growth is distinctive as you can see the girdle scars up to a point.
I have a few books, I will look at my collection and pick out the best ones to read.
Top of my head "trees, their use, management, cultivation and biology" by Bob Watson is something I refer to.
"Body language of tree" is essential I think for climbers as you get a better understanding of timber strength and how to spot weaknesses.

I got one a few months back. It is bigger than a standard safety lid but the earmuffs and internal safety specs are good, tho an expensive extra, and I still get dust in eyes!
Unfortunately due to working in rail at the time, I had to get a plain white one which is damned ugly compared to other colours

Would'nt want any side loading on carabiners. A steel/stainless quicklink would handle that no problem but Im unsure if they are allowable in arb work, or if its only triple locking gates.

The leylandii Im doing at the moment is fun, 6+ stems.
Im not taking away the waste on this one its just going over a fence, but Im rashing it up small first. A lot more effort to throw but it will lay flatter and rot down much quicker.
Noticed my chain sparks occasionally but theres no metal or any abrasive materials in the pile, just wood. Any idea what would cause it?

Sparks.....trees can take up little stones as they grow that become inclusions in the timber. You have to be really careful at root level. Ask me how I know. Flints galore here. Cut roots and expect chain damage. I just did a chain cutting that sycamore low down. You can also hit old nails, barbed wire etc which were hammered in years ago and which the tree has grown over.

I need to start getting my tickets. The local head tree assessor said he could do mine but not heard from him since. I need to have CS30,CS31, CS32 and CS38 Aerial Rescue, soon...
I want a strict assessment, not an easy pass. Anyone know somone able to do the assessment? Rather than me having to buy week courses for each and take time off work..

Mostly for knowing small details people typically fail on
