Will there be an update on the CanAm soon?

While I was/am waiting for bits I picked up a GSX1400 which had been dropped. Cosmetic damage only which is all sorted bar the dented tank now, and that can stay as it is. I'll be taking that up for MOT next week hopefully then it will become main transport.

Then if all goes to plan (yeah, I know!) after Christmas the running order is:-
1) Dresda
2) Draw through turbo ET.
3) Can Am.

During/in between that lot I want to fit in converting the 1100G to fuel injection.

After the above the project list is the 1100 EL/Bandit hybrid with injection, restoration without modification of the other ET, and the Ski-Doo which is still under serious consideration for becoming a Kettenkrad.

Then the realisation hits that the clock is ticking and if you don't start cracking on the next time they see the light of day will be at the estate sale.

Something like the turbo, which has been a long time desire to build, has even more time pressure on it as there's little point building something I can't ride. So it has to be done and used before I reach that age or state of health.

The silver barrels are the high comp big bore for the normally aspirated engine going into the Dresda. The single cyl barrel and head are for a 250 cc Two Stroke Rotax engine in a Can Am. The black barrels and cases are for the draw through turbo engine.


Things have moved on a touch now. I'm doing some extra work to the bottom end of the turbo engine so that it'll take up to 300 hp, then the boost will be set for around 220 - 250 to keep it reliable. The race stuff for the normally aspirated will allow me (once I select cams) to get that into the 150 - 160 hp bracket. Both will be somewhat lively and no doubt great fun to ride. Once the Dresda is done it'll get taken to a few shows, out for a blast or two, then moved on. I doubt I'll be able to fold myself into the correct position to ride it for more than 20 minutes.

There won't be any traction control beyond what I do with the throttle, and trailing a little rear brake when required. It's going to be a proper old skool 'respect it or pay the price' bike.

Well I've built and raced a suck through turbo engined race car, makes me smile now just thinking about it - maybe the turbo was a bit big, but it had loads of power - and loads of lag. I couldn't imagine using it on a bike without something to stop it throwing me on my bum down the road. Hats off to you.

That sounds like a right laugh, no doubt with added pyrotechnics when you hit it after throttling down.

Fortunately I'm old enough to have come up on two strokes, and the riding style (if you want to avoid death and destruction!) is remarkably similar. Keep the revs in a band, don't throttle right off then throttle on, and never ever pin it as you're coming up to or on the crown of a bend.

The other thing that will help is it's not really a bike built for scratching around, so it tends to be a case of getting all your braking done, then deal with the corner, then get on it again rather than a modern sports bike or similar where you try to overlap all of those as much as possible.

That last paragraph pretty much sums up my Vmax trike. I keep having visions of lairy slides around the corner with the inside rear wheel dangling in mid air, so it's fast down the straight, easy in the bends. The vmax has an irs back end, whereas my Kawasaki 750 was solid axle, used to do my best to get the inside wheel up on that.

In other news, the huff and puff side of things is moving again at last with the Garrett GTW34R getting fitted up. I'm looking forward to the point where I can fit everything up to the fresh cases as it should look as good as it sounds and goes. Shouldn't be too long before it's back, although with everything else going on this will probably not get much progress until I'm in the new workshop.

Nice exhaust work. If I'm honest, I would say I think your plenum is too small, and maybe restrictive, but it's only a feeling, and what do I know anyway. Take no notice...

I'm far from an expert myself, but as I understand it for a blow through you need a larger plenum, but for a draw through like this the plenum is much smaller as it doesn't need to 'store' a volume. It's part of the reason why a draw through has power delivery similar to a two stroke as it has an operating band.

The MrTurbo inlet doesn't look very different at all. Did 183mph on the salt.

Some more work in progress pics from the welderist. Now that it's all married up the slash cuts can be made, then weld, dress, clean, oil fittings, carb and I should be able to collect it back end of next week.

He does really high quality work, which is why it made sense to just give him the bike with dummy cases and let him do it start to finish rather than get bits from here and there, then get someone to weld it up etc.

For added interest and provenance I may build this on to a different frame when it gets built up. I have an ex-Pip Higham frame with his name and the Village Bike Shop address on the old V5. It's completely trigger's broom but it just adds a bit of back story.
