Why "E1" when it has "81" on the conning tower?

They were E class boats and all imaginatively named HMS E1 et seq.

Or HMSubmarine for the pedants!

The 81 will be her pennant number which bears no reference to her name. Ie the old HMS Cardiff was D108.

I have recently read Fitzroy MacLean' s book Eastern Approaches that covers the situation in Balkans during WW2, the photos in it pointed me in the Yugoslav direction.

Fascinating and very readable. He was an extraordinary character.

I spent time travelling in Yugoslavia in the early 70s. I asked a truck driver stranded in a bar (they weren't allowed to drive on Sundays) what he thought would happen on the death of Tito. He silently drew his finger across his throat. Prescient.
