Weld looks pretty bad for a pro

Hi,

Sorry I wasn't sure where to put this, yet thought the learning area would be best given that the structural welding to my new house looks pretty bad, yet I'm not a welder, hence coming to ask you good folk.

I'm currently getting a house extended/renovated to move into. There is a number of columns and beams, which have all been welded (no bolting). However as a novice, I'm concerned that the whole back of the house is being held up by essentially "metal glue"

Below are some pictures of the job and the welds. Can anyone tell me if they look sufficient for the application?

Wow they look awful! No prep, poor penetration and porosity in some of them! I'm no welder and i'd be ashamed if my welds came out like that

They look real poor, take a wire brush and chipping hammer to them to knock off some of the slag and see what really lies below. Personally I'd be ringing the company that did the work and asking for them to sort out getting a proper welder in to re do the job

Like the other guys I’m not gonna sugar coat it .... they look terrible and are certainly not suitable for the structural steel work in your house.
It’s littered with defects. Lack of fusion, slag inclusions, cold laps, poorly blended toes, porosity, stacks of undercut and the list goes on.
The whole lot wants chopping right out and someone with the right skill set needs getting in to weld them properly. The design alone is what is keeping that structure up because the welding would almost certainly fail if it was under load.
Sorry if it’s not what you wanted to hear but If it fails catastrophically it’s not worth thinking about.

builder by trade but i can say thats not good enough

had it done on last site i was on and he did way better than that pigeon crap

I may do a bit of arc welding and build certain things but i can say I wouldnt tackle that weld why didnt they use a bolt on plate and drill through the other beam

I should be careful if you do. You might chip off all of the "weld"

That is not even close to a good weld, has your architect seen them ? if he thinks they are OK get a new architect as well What does the building inspector think ?

Ask council building inspector to come and examine ? That way you would have a professional opinion that it's not acceptable.

I think that’s probably the worst examples of so-called “professional” welding I’ve ever seen!
It beggars belief that someone thought that was acceptable.
Not meaning this in a rude way but it’s the sort of welds we see on here from a beginner who’s just unboxed a new machine.
If it was me i think I’d be making a LOT of noise about it.

What about that massive overcut through the web where it's notched...
Where the plate is welded to the post, I gather that's been done in a workshop... looks tiny... and not even welded to the end by the looks.

Building inspector probably won't know the ins and outs of welding.... assuming you have a SE working on the job? Fire a few photos off to see what he says...
Is the builder supplying the steel or you contracted it directly? I'd be on the phone now to whichever is relevant.
I'd stop doing anything more till thatabomination is rectified.

a word of warning don't grind anything off those beams

on both sets of beams you have 2 walls built on top of those beams on either side of that post

acrow the damn things before you attempt anything otherwise you could lose the whole front wall on just one side and even your floor could fall as well in either of the buildings extensions at the front

Surely if they're structural building control should have been inspecting it as previously mentioned....as they would have done with the footings.

I can't see why that's site welded either really.
If it's a strength issue, I imagine whomever worked it out was expecting 6mm continuous welds. Nothing overly complicated from what I can see.

Load of poo . Reject the work and call the building inspector and whatever structural engineer.
Frankly it proves 1090 was pointless when folks try and pass rubbish like this off as structural welding!

I would not think that OK on a tinny dog kennel
