From what i've seen this powder welding gear isn't that cheap

I picked up a kit at rufforth a few yrs ago, and since then i've not needed it
.
The powders are extremely expensive, however plenty comes up on you know where, for little money.
Wasn't aware you could weld with it, thought it was build up only.

I offered one on here new with 5 pots of powder free and no takers so swapped it at auto jumble to a trader for8 sticks of silver solder. was just going to chuck it

Its the best possible way of repairing cast iron (unless you have a furnace to heat parts to red heat), but as the few CI repairs I do certainly dont warrant rental of OA cylinders, the gear went to someone I thought might have a use for it.

I paid I think £25 for Eutectic powder welding kit in the original box, which seemed to be complete and unused. Another £30 bought 30kg of various powders from a local railway works closure, so didnt think £55 for everything (other than OA gear), was that costly to be up and running for possible CI repair business?

No never used it. Far too busy with bike work, but it seemed perfect for anyone wanting to set up a small part time business without a lot of up front expense. The few CI repairs I do now are easily done with tig brazing.

Meh, I got stung and haven't touched it. I'll have a look and see how I might use it to repair a broken plate but I thought it was for build up only.

Fair enough if TIG brazing is low heat unlike OA, my mistake thinking they're pretty similar. Though I still don't see that it can be as cold as MMA where you use very low amps and can keep the part very, very cool with short runs.

I have never photo'd my CI repairs, it's only very recently I got a decent phone where taking good pictures is easy.
I expect to do a crack in a cylinder head soon, in which case I will take photos.
Not got any knowledge of power welding but have looked on YouTube before to see what it's about. All I saw was building up parts not joining them up but surely that takes a fair bit of heat too?

Tig brazing I would say is lower heat than any fusion process, which in my view makes it better for most CI repairs, than fusion processes, which can introduce a lot more problems.

200 mile round trip to buy two kits, when I get there, there's only one...
Even that one has parts missing. Same price though, take it or leave it.
I am pretty sure it's for buildup and resurfacing, not for joining parts. I will use it when I have a complex spindle or cracked part to repair. One of these days I'll use it to build up the worn face of my linishing machine, it should be perfect for that but would need to be milled flat and I haven't set up the Bridgeport yet. The shed needs a bit of a tidy up and a LOT more space before I even think about it.

The Superjet-3 Eutalloy kit that Screwdriver bought came with 20kg of powder, was complete in the original case and seemed to me to be unused. This is the kit: https://www.castolin.com/product/superjet-s-kits
I did have another incomplete and much older kit that I would have included in the sale FOC, but as I coudnt find it, that wasnt possible. He paid £60 for torch and 20kg powder (some of which was water damaged), and also took away a substantial 5mm plate machine stand FOC.

For what its worth I just plain old mig welded (MS wire and Co2) a cast turbine housing on an impreza turbo so it would fit my Pug 306. Also welded up my uncles exhaust manifold on his Deutz tractor and both are still holding. I realise it is completely the wrong way of doing and they are ugly, ugly welds. Didn't weld nice at all but they are holding and that was the primary goal. Well.... the tractor manifold will probably hold until he rips the exhaust against a branch again!

just mill an 1/8 th of it and screw a bit of 1/8plate on top its quicker
