Welding sill advice needed

Legal limit on an LGV is apparently 1mm across two-thirds of the tyre.

Tell that to the fuzz. I was done for an 'unroadworthy tyre' which, as an ex tyre fitter, I knew to be legal. The 'bald' part of the tread didn't extend more than 20% of the width being confined to the outer shoulder only after a tracking error had been fixed. You go into court and the magistrate (who doesn't need to know anything about the law) will nearly always take the word of a scuffer over that of a member of the public regardless of any qualifications or training they may have. In the 70's a £50 fine and 2 points on my licence weren't to be sniffed at!

If it was 20% then they were right. You can only have 12.5% each side with less than 1.6mm.

The regs are the central 75% must have 1.6mm with the remainder having visible tread.

Tyres. Tyres MUST be correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification for the load being carried. Always refer to the vehicle’s handbook or data. Tyres should also be free from certain cuts and other defects. Cars, light vans and light trailers MUST have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference. Motorcycles, large vehicles and passenger-carrying vehicles MUST have a tread depth of at least 1 mm across three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and in a continuous band around the entire circumference. Mopeds should have visible tread. Be aware that some vehicle defects can attract penalty points.

Legal tread depth has changed since the 70's. Back then 1mm was enough as long as it was across 75% of the tread even on goods vehicles. By any calculation 20% is less than a quarter.

So I realise this is a slightly old topic now, but it would seem (hahaha) people have missed something. That post that was put up with the section from acceptable repair, though it isn't very clear, does very much so read that if I patch has been replaced and butts up to an area (that it was removed from) that was spot welded then this is a suitable repair as long as the damaged/corroded area has been fully removed to a suitable point.
I spent 5 years with a Landy specialist and have repaired more old discoverys and defenders than I care to count, but have NEVER had any fail due to repairing an area with a patch that was butt welded all around bar the drop of the two panels joining which I spot welded.

And I swear they removed the tapping stick (hammer) this year from the mot tester did they not? I was under the impression they can only apply force to a rust affected area with a fore finger or thumb now... but I also haven't working in a garage doing repair work in over a year.
