some stainless steel tubes for brake caliper sliders.......
.....I'd accidently thrown the ones away when doing a rebuild of the brakes and suspension on my car. they are basically thick wall tubes. I could have bought them in a kit with some new bolts and rubber guides, but since I already had them I didn't want to pay £20 for something that I might not use for another 10 years, so bought some stainless steel bar instead. lucky for me, the sliders are 1/2" diameter, so got some 303 stainless steel on ebay for less than £4 and it was delivered the following day.
I ended up using a 2mt er20 collet chuck so I didnt mark the ground surface of the stainless bar
and the finished items
looks like I'll need to make a er20 collet holder that mounts to the lathes spindle nose. as the overhang with the 2mt collet chuck did cause some flexing when facing the ends of the longer tubes. with hindsight I could have centre drilled the end, and then faced the end with a half centre in the tailstock and then drilled the hole to size.
its just handy having a lathe so you can do these jobs as and when required

A few months ago a good friend allowed me to mess with his lathe and make this.
A soot lamp from scrap plumping parts.
So today, rummaging in my scrap bin. I found 2 candle holders. Yes, smashed, bent and scraped.
I found 2 useful bits, from the remains.
So, a plan was hatched.
This was 8am.
9:30am I had to be 8 miles away, smartly dressed and clean.
Why? More of that soon.
Cute. Good.
Now time for the 4 S's. and away.
Today my friend got married to his long time partner. A simple affair, a few drinks in a pub I made the real ale cask stand and away they go.
What do you give a man with everything, aside penicillin.
A silly gift to him and his wife.
I wish them the best.

Thats some good work Ardvark. I too made a soot lamp, but mine is far more agricultural than yours.

A soot lamp is used to place a layer of soot on metal when fitting them to see what needs to be removed.
