Well....yes. But if you get weld burns from the U-V light, you are risking skin cancer. Even men from the north can get that. Just look at the sun bed victims.

to get this thread back on track-you blokes are terrible for going off subject - I wore me Wayne n Waynetta onesie yesterday, I wore me bib n brace overalls and a welding jacket (lightweigh cotton one).
I got the onesie coz I been away living in rough digs and it came in handy, but also I will be wearing it under me motorbike gear this winter.
I might cut the hood off though. I used to have one of those fibre pile onesies worn by winter anglers, but they are too warm to be active in, and too bulky-you look like that michelin bloke in em.
Make sure you go to the loo for a number two before you get kitted up though.
Anyway, it worked a treat, I reckon for outside work this winter its gonna be thermals, onesie and overalls over the top,should be warm wi out bulk.
On me bonce I had one of them thin stretch beanies running types wear, and one of them welding caps (yank ones-forget the name) on top of that.

Flame resistant overalls and a kromer. Nothing but for me. Leather jacket too if doing lot of stick work.
Have had boilersuit catch light on me before though.......

800mm square plate, 300mm hole through the middle, 70mm thick. One either end of a 500mm long piece of 300mm tube. 2 pass Weld around inside of hole onto end of tube, 20 mm fillet around the outside. 4 gusset plates with 15mm fillets if that makes sense??

Anyway plonked it on a bench on a spinner so i could turn it as i was welding it (All was rooted with low hy, then filled out with FCAW at some seriously high current) and perched my harris on a tressle which was nearby. Getting on with it minding my own business for quite a while and had zoned out as you do lol when my eyes started stinging, and something that stunk had started to irritate the hell out of the inside of my nose. When I could feel the heat on the underneath of my chin, I realise "Oh cr@p I'm on fire", bring on the panicking, have never got out of a boilersuit so bloody quickly lol.

Whipped my headshield off and realised despite my boilersuit being "flame retardent", from halfway up my thighs to the middle of my chest was alight. Had been washed god knows how many times, must have washed the treatment out of them, and being oily didnt help i guess.

Cue swift fag break, cup of coffee and chill for a bit, then back to it lol

the flame retardant on overalls only lasts bout 2 washs

This is what I have been getting so I just got some kevlar sleeves as the chrome leather gauntlets are too tight round my muscles on my forearm.

I do allot of MMA welding with stainless 312 rods! Self releasing slag is evil!

I never weld without a welding jacket on which has leather arms, Kromer cap, gloves and every extra (darth vader) helmet extension speedglas sell. If I kneel and weld, I even have a black leather welding blanket I drape over my knees and private bits.

Welding under cars is not like welding at a bench.

I very rarely do rusty car repairs. Its all butchering stainless DPF filters and cracked stainless exhausts and manifolds, broken bolt removal. All in situ... MMA is superior to MIG for these types of jobs due to access, after a while you learn you can get a arc welding rod where you can't get a MIG torch.

Been contemplating buying a leather "monkey mask" as sometimes a welding helmet just keeps getting in the way.

Best fixed screen helmet I had was a Superglas white pipeliner, it had a rubber band at the back instead of a ratchet! But it went walk-about. Been using a Jackson shadow with a fixed 10 glass in it. This has a narrow profile!

Usually a minimum of dickies fireproofs, and some dewalt rigger boots, used to wear lace ups till I got a piece of metal down them, even quick release don't release that quick. Also I mostly use mma at work, so Miller heavy duty gloves with the silicon backs ( superb ) and speedglas flexview. If I'm doing overhead I wear a proban hood, and if it's especially cold on site I have a nomex balaclava

we used to wear ex army gaiters some years back, there were no long boots available then, now you can get high leg boots with steel toecaps and use elastic bands to "blouse" your trouser leg bottoms military style, keeps most stuff out.
