looking through your stats and tests in homeview you have a fault.

either a line fault, a equipment fault (faulty rtr) or internal wiring. without a hands on check its impossible to tell.

time to get a home visit.

Just dealing with the BT line test bot. How do you pronounce Circet, so I don't come across as a bell-end? Two soft C's?

Just went down around 22:18. Light still blue.

By chance I saw one of the neighbours returning home as I was taking the dog out for a pee, just before.

Ping to 192.168.1.254 (hub) working fine, so wi-fi itself presumably not affected.

Connection currently at dial-up speeds.

yes all bt hubs will show snr in advanced.

TARGET snr is 6. that is what it should be if your broadband is stable and at max speed. anything higher means the DLM is limiting your speed due to instability, or your speed limited due to contract.

Do you have a link to the noise margin info? I'm intrigued, and wish to know more.

Data rate is given as "448k / 4.58meg" and noise margin as 26dB / 4.3dB. Looks to me like they list them as Upload/Download

Download at 4.5meg sounds about right for 48dB attenuation, we get just a bit faster 9n 53dB but I have taken steps to optimise that.

you are correct. they changed the format to the other way on later hubs and its been so long id forgotton.

however snr being in the 4's means a dirty line anyway and it has a really high radius log count, so my point stands.

SNR and noise margin are not the same thing, even though, depending on the manufacturer, the SNR Margin may be called various things, including Receive Margin, SNR (???), Noise, SNRM or Noise Margin, the figure being the difference between the actual SNR and the SNR required to run at a specific speed. Every day is a school day!!

Me too! I think that the latter is the maximum noise level that can be tolerated, but I am still not sure why a better signal to noise ratio is not automatically a good thing? Perhaps it doesn't have the parallels with RF that I had assumed?

The 6dB figure mentioned by @qwakers makes perfect sense.

the higher the snr, the more speed that is available compared to what is being suppled. if your snr is 20, and your speed is 10, wouldn't you rather have 25mbps and a snr of 6 ish?
