Both cars are showing -6 but the outside temp gauge behind the workshop was only -3.25, possibly as its near the building and keeps a bit warmer. The workshop pellet boiler and fan coil units are doing their stuff and keeping the temp above the dew point so no condensation on the tools. I cocked it up last year by about 1.5c as I had raised the sensor closer to the workshop ceiling and had to derust some newly cleaned up cast iron saw benches and planer/thicknesser.

It was 0 deg c in the workshop last night, didn't stay long, just put a few things in the van for today.

6.9C today in the workshop. I need to finish some fibreglass work, so gave up for the day. It would have taken all day and a lot of gas to pull the temperature up enough. Instead I decided to take a Scimitar home, but starting it up showed that the tatty exhaust had finally cracked all the way round the collector box to pipe connection. Luckily it was on the lift outside so I braved the 2C cold and applied some repair paste and bandage just to get me home. I do have a new old exhaust system for it, when Infinity Exhausts finally get my project manifolds to fit properly!

Snow over night. The missus was going to go out and sweep the drive before somebody drove up and compacted it. Once that happens, cars can't get up the steep bit near the house.

I volunteered if she made porridge. Before.

10 minutes later, just as the porridge was ready.

I did cheat a bit.....

I'll finish it off after the porridge.

I left my little Skoda Citigo courtessy car idling for a few hours the other day.

Sat in it - on and off - got radio/seat/cup holder - had a brew and warm up - ate my pack up.

Just worked the cost of this action out:

(1 litre = 0.74 kilogram) – Petrol weighs 740grams per litre at 15oC

6.15g x60mins = 369g per hour

Exactly 500ml per hour

If petrol is £1.50 a litre (ish)

75p per hour idling (ish)

1000cc VAG 3 cylinder engine is rated at 1.4kw water jacket heat loss.

And there will be other heat losses: radiant heat, exhaust gas temp, front coolant radiator/pipework.

So the internal blower matrix – is not that powerfull – it is just in a small space and appears to be good.


What supprised me was how low the heat losses are – duty cycle is unreal for modern engine.

So to conclude - the 1.4kw ceramic heater above my office desk - even @ 34p per kwh (nominal domestic energy cap rate) would only costs 47.6p an hour to run.

I am still in the last year of a cheap 3yr energy contract - my workshop electric at Day rate is 15.63p + VAT (Night rate 10.21p + VAT). Only till Oct 2023 - then I am expecting a huge shocking leap to about 66.2p + VAT for commercial electricity (there is no energy cap on commercial electricity).

So at the moment my 1.4 kwh single panel electric heater would cost me 26.25p an hour to run. But at the new proposed rate £1.12 ish an hour

The math continues - my propane Bullfinch gemini two panel heater - on a 47kg bottle.

47kg propane bottle contains 2183244 btu or with conversion 639.69 kw

At £90 squid a bottle - one panel at 2.8kw costs 40p per hour to run and two panels at 5.6kw 80p per hour

Proper cold here last night, coldest yet. Last night it was down at -5.9c. Workshop is still about 6.5c though.

I'm going through about 40kg of pellets a week in this cold spell to keep rust at bay, about 36 quids worth. Normally the workshop heats up with the sun through the roof lights during the day, a bit of thermal gain, and then the fan coil units kick in a couple of times a night. As you can see on the top line, this is a week long graph, its kicking in at night and day every 30 minutes. The weather is supposed to be warming up later this week.

It's OK it will warm up around Sunday (MK area, source "Metcheck", which is excellent).

Then it will rain a lot for a few days, and after freeze solid again.
