I know the 440 looks a bit rough on the outside but thats just because the paints all come off......engines come from an old motorhome from some salty state. Assuming Washington or somewhere around that area as the entire thing was rotten to the core
Removed the exhaust manifold just to have a look inside the ports and they look perfect, came off with no effort either! 3/8ths wrench with no need for a breaker
Anyway 351c stripped down and ready for removal, 440 Mopar stripped of all unnecessary crap and ready for shot blasting and painting before installation grin emoticon big block transplant is go!
Did some measuring too, Mopar sump 5 1/4 deep at the rear (rear sump RV pan)
Ford sump is a front pan but the main sump body itself is 4" deep with another inch and a bit between it and the frame, this means I should be able to get away with leaving the rear sump on or worst case scenario cutting an inch off the base of the sump, welding it back up with a shortened pick up and running an oil filter and oil cooler on a remote system in order to gain a couple of extra quarts back
The engines are nigh on identical in width, height and length! So we should be good to go and the rad pipework should be fine on top with a small mod to the bottom hose in order to get it on (I'm thinking bent stainless pipe)
Alternator and PS pump can be made to fit the 440 by adapting the brackets
Day one and I think the 440 is winning....so far it's claimed one knuckle and two lifting bolts. The Torino looks like it's had a major hemorrhage and died.....
Only took me two hours to remove the old 351 and the hood, rad etc. The rest of my time was spent manhandling everything about and collecting some steel and other consumables for tomorrows work!
Oh the width of the chassis is also 30.5" which makes it dead easy for me to make the engine mounts, nice simple number to mess with. The exhaust looks like it should work nicely and header wise I will have to manufacture my own but I've got a nice idea of how to make them fit and flow real well
Engine mounts welded up, triple and double passes made for top/bottom and sides respectively. They wont be coming apart!
440 is in and still putting up a fight...I had to lose the AC in order to get it in properly but the gearbox was used as a guide, I bolted it to the crossmember to make sure the prop was central and as it was two bolts there isn't much movement to be had
One mount has been poorly tacked in place so I'll be cutting it out and restarting in the morning. Was too dark to see properly and I tried to be smart and weld with a torch shining, didn't work out so tomorrows plan is weld up the mounts and start putting the car back together
Bumper and new front end on.......its as if its had a midlife crisis and grown a moustache! Although he is 42 now.....
Did find water in one of the bores after spinning the engine over by hand, assuming its from when I was fitting it in the rain and some waters just gone down the carb neck, came out looking nasty but engine turns over fine with no tight spots so I threw a litre of oil down the inlet turned it over to get everything coated and popped the plugs back in.
Just a quick one today, waxoyl filled the cavities and sprayed the roof very roughly just to get a taste of what it'll look like once sprayed properly (plus I had to protect the repaired roof)
Tomorrow I'll make a start on some new wiring, start sound proofing as I didn't get a chance today and putting some interior back in!
Picked up some stainless pipe so I can practice my welding for the headers too
Block off plate
Tin Man mounts with all new hardware
Felpro gaskets for the sump and inlet
Fuel rail for the 750DP
Mallory Condensor for the dizzy
Custom set of leads from Performance leads UK, 8mm silicone good for 50kv and 600hp
And some Joes racing switch and starter panels
The switch panels really are worth the money, great quality and they just look sweet!
Anyway I bolted the new inlet on just to make sure it would fit, removed the old dizzy and swapped over the oil filter, will drain the sump before I swap it over then drop in some good quality oil and hopefully I might be able to get it started if alls well
Overpriced, useless and rude on the phone for the most part. They don't seem to care about anything until you hand over card details.....only reason I bought the gaskets from them was because they're the only place who had them in at short notice, had I been thinking I'd have got them in from Summit at the same time as the switches
They got my name and the house wrong on the box so it was delivered to the wrong address and its not the first time......
Paint wise it'll get redone properly in white with a black roof and possibly a black stripe down the bonnet, may be getting a fibreglass hood at some point plus pins so I can fit a hemi scoop
Off to pick up some bolts and hylomar in a bit so I can sort out everything
The engine is mounted! Mounts have been welded to the chassis
However..........I went to fit the dizzy and its got the wrong length tang on it.......too short! So I'll have to either modify it or buy a new one
And I have a brilliant plan for the headers!
This thread shows exactly what I want and due to how much space I have I hopefully shouldn't need to notch the A arms.
I've got enough space to come out and up as my heads aren't quite as wide.....in face if the starter motor was on the passenger side I reckon I could use standard charger headers
