Just want to write a note to say thanks for pinning this and sharing. I am getting into this as a hobby and could have seen myself using a 2k paint without the proper protection. I will be steering well clear of it as can't justify the PPE needed (plus my compressor isn't strong enough). 1k / Cellulose only for me.

Look into HMG Nisocoat 2 if you want a decent compromise between full fat 2k and single pack paints. From reading the MSDS Nisocoat is no more risky to use than Epoxy primers or even single pack car paints. According to HMG for low to moderate exposure you need a full face respirator with abek2p3 filters, painters overalls and chemical gloves (cheap from screwfix). It's a very smelly paint and I can't smell it at all wearing my 3m 6800. I have been using it on a "quick" respray of my daily (currently bogged down in endless tiny rust spots and not so tiny rust spots lol) and have found that you can get a decent gun finish with it, it's pretty user friendly, has good coverage/ solids content and gloss levels and unlike unibinder 2k it dries rock hard within a couple of weeks at 20C. The only issue with it is that it flashes off quickly even with slow 2k thinner so it's not suited to painting a whole car in one go. I've been prepping panels and painting then a couple at a time. This suits me OK tbh as I couldn't be bothered to rig up a proper booth to deal with overspray- in my big shed I can easily paint a roof, bonnet or pair of doors without any issues of overspray messing up the gun finish as it falls from the air.

Yeah I've always put them in a zip lock bag and just squeezed as much air out as possible. Vacuum it would increase life even more.
Advice from 3m is to change them either when breathing becomes laboured (overspray may have clogged the p3 filter) or when you start to smell the product. I've so far done more than half the car and the filters still seem fine.

Is there an epoxy primer available that can be brush painted without air fed breathing equipment? Is it safe to use such primer outside?

Epoxy primers are non isocyanate so can be painted with conventional PPE. Some are more suited to spraying than brushing, some are better for underside parts and some are better for bodywork, so it depends on your application. As for painting outside, you need to have an air temperature of at least 15C if you want it to cure in a sensible period of time.

The only thing I would add to that is cover up bare skin when working with epoxy products as some of them contain chemicals that are potent skin sensitisers

And bear in mind that anything that is coated with it, stays coated. So old clothes etc are the order of the day.

And watches. I did a spot of spray painting in the summer. My watch is still covered in specs of paint. Farrow and Balls finest, lol
I can vouch for this, years ago i was using west epoxy on my boat, i got a splash of epoxy hardener on my watch strap, didnt notice for half an hour. Then it started to burn, Cleaned it off with soap & water & it got redder then blistered badly. A proper chemical burn, It took three weeks to heal up.
Meanwhile i had washed the webbing watch strap with acetone & dried it out. Put it on a month later & within an hour the poxy burn came back. Threw the watch strap away! For about three years afterwards i only had to mix the stuff up & the affected area would start to itch & go red. Nitrile gloves are the order of the day now.
Tales of epoxy sensitization are quite common in the boat trade.
Hi. I think that any body using 2k paints outside a professional spray booth with all the equipment is nuts.Too many body shop painter's have and are suffering from the effects of isocyanate with no recourse from employers or manufacturers

Jotun epoxy primer for example, on steel frames (new angle iron) DIY friendly, brush able?

Jotun is good stuff for brush painting such parts. However, it does need a decent abrasion to allow it to do its stuff. I would be going over the steel with 80 grit on a D/A to key it. Use cheap brushes and don't bother cleaning them, is my advice. There are users on here more experienced with Jotun than me, so see what they say. @Burdekin @Dcal come to mind. I use Lechler exclusively because I an painting fibreglass bodies.

As long as you understand that 2K only means 2 Komponent. It tells you nothing about the isocyanate content, which will be found in the material's data sheets.

Nope. Not at all.
Most filter material is electrostatically charged to aid with the filtration. The charge dissipates over time reducing filtration efficiency. It’s why filters and respirators have an expiry date
