A Decent Supermarket Pizza ?

I remember watching a TV programme (I think it's called "Inside the Factory" or something like that) which showed a pizza factory in Italy making pizzas for UK supermarkets,

They pointed out that the frozen and the fresh pizza they made were exactly the same product. The fresh ones are dearer in the supermarket to allow for waste.

I like Chicago Town tiger crust pizza, with an added layer of pepperoni slices, a whole tin of anchovies and a sprinkle of chilli flakes. I have to cook it the oven on the shelf below SWMBOs in case it drips.

What make are those??? The packaging, the inclusion of sun-dried tomato and the use of the term "Wood fired" makes them look very similar to the expensive "M&S" ones I've been buying.

Aldi, but I too have noticed similar. Ingredients are reasonably generous. Extra mozzarella and some chilli oil - they turned out okay. We do have a couple of pizza stones and some dough in the freezer. These are just too convenient for a quick meal. One day we hope to get a decent pizza oven built. Must be a laser-cut, weld-it-up-yourself kit out (t)here?

Aldi; that's very interesting! I am quite some distance from the nearest branch of Aldi, but will definately take a look next time I'm there. If you checkout the link in my post #12, I think you'll see the similarities. I mentioned the M&S ones had gone downhill - notably, the sun-dried tomatoes have gone and I suspect they were adding appreciably to the taste. Thanks.

IMO the supermarkets in general have done a great job in changing our taste buds to what they want to sell us. Remember watching a series of programmes about breaking into Tesco's. A number of home chefs competed for shelf space in a supermarket but the winners product was always doctored by the buying group to give it a longer shelf life and a cheaper price point and in the process change the basic structure and taste.
Their pizzas are no different and because of the road miles and distribution centres they go through they need to have additional products and processes added to enhance shelf life and in the process change the structure and taste of their products. This is especially true with the dough base most of which imo have an almost biscuit base.
We all have our own favourite but IMO none I have tried so far come close to a traditional Italian thin and crispy pizza freshly prepared and baked in a wood fired oven. I still eat supermarket pizza for handiness and probably m+s fresh are my go to.

You will have to excuse me for lowering the tone, but I enjoy the basic Aldi frozen essentials pepperoni pizza. Not the best but i enjoy it morethan some of the more expensive ones - and only 75p - never mind the quality, feel the width!!! Please forgive this brief interlude into the quality pizza debate! Oh, and enjoy with a bit of salad!

Sales and marketing exist for that reason, selling us convenience or something I guess.

Pizza base takes about 15 minutes of effort over anything from 2 to 48 hours, shop bought is pretty dissapointing after getting good enough at homemade.

We make pizza at home, I agree far nicer.

But I work 12-13hr days Mrs slightly less but after all the nonsense to sort in an evening the will to make a base evaporates.

We've all been encouraged to live a pretty crappy life, wanting things we don't need, leading to working longer and longer.
(Arguably my long days are because I find walking away from a breakdown difficult)

I'm from Yorkshire - we like our money in our pocket . And, a bit of salad with a touch of Caesar salad dressing, and not the low-cal stuff?

We get through a lot of frozen pizzas so for the young people price is important.
Time is the key variable - takes five minutes to participate in preparing so on a busy day a perfect dinner, and the children will eat it.

For me, I take a Goodfellows cheese frozen pizza, add bazil, oregano, olives or anchovies, and extra cheese. The result is something superior to the Dominos down the street, visiting adults have all found these excellent.

I suppose there's something to be said for getting the very basic supermarket pizza and then adding a load of stuff to it - cuts out a lot of the time-consuming bit, I might have a go. My only concern is that if I add loads of stuff to a frozen pizza when it goes in the oven, surely the extra bits will be over-cooked by the time it's all done? Are you guys adding the extras part-way through the cooking time?

No that is too complex, just need to alter cooking times a bit. What works for me is put the unaltered frozen pizza in the middle of the oven, and then the modified one a little later after the additions on the top rack, and run for suggested time, all are pretty much cooked at the same ending time. turning down or off the fan oven is key, fan ovens burn most things and especially pizzas.

exactly this, adding the extras, we never had took much heed of the times imposed, more a bit of using them as a guide and keeping an eye on it, and taking it out as necessary usually before it disappears as smoke...
