About time I bought a fire extinguisher for the workshop...

Our military vehicles used to be equipped with a small bottle of trichloroethylene to put out engine fires with.

Since there seem to be the community opinion either co2 or cl based extinguishers are the best why not combine them into COCl2, then you won't need to worry about fires anymore

I always say you can't have enough fire extinguishers. What is important is that you know which extinguisher to use in any given situation.

Like I'm sure many others on here I benefitted from a military career where putting out fires was taught and practised on an annual basis.

I was taught that you can safely let rip with a CO2 extinguisher on any type of fire (excluding hot aircraft brakes where a little care is needed!), so that makes one or two of those a given!

Legally they are yours.
It now falls to you to dispose of them legally.
If the Chubb had removed them because they were years old for a water or powder based unit. He did not do his job. He should offered a Discharge test and refill and this should ne documented on the paper work.
If he removed as there were condemned, it is his legal duty to decommission them in accordance with BAFE and HSE. Failure to do so is a breech of the BAFE regulations.

The units should be marked up accordingly.

Now he could offer to dispose of the units, unless they are subject to environmental control he is not allowed to charge for that service. Halon will always have a charge to dispose.

Plenty of 30 yr old extinguishers still work first time. Mine were only 3 yrs old.

I had two out of date ones, I let one off in the garden to see what kind of mess they make (And absolutely not to make a spud gun ), it worked well enough I decided to keep the second one. Chances are if I have a fire to put out I'll get the hose anyway.

Last year my shed was on fire, no idea why, no electrics or chemicals inside, only tool boxes with hammer drill and other stuff for the garden.........and behind it is the stove's wodd storage.
I 've had 3 CO2 fire extinguishers used to no avail, powder was the same, garden hose was perfect.
So now i have a water extinguisher for the shed, anything wood related, and still CO2 in the garage close to the kitchen door.

BTW the fire was so hot my spare wheel, rim only, melted, and it's a very big alloy rim 17x8 with beadlocks.
Lost some equipment with the fire, expensive and old, so did not get the insurance to pay for it.......

Why were they swooped after 3 years.
Powder, foams and water have to have a yearly service and a Discharge test and refill every 5 years. CO2 need a cylinder test every 10 years.

I would be asking why they were changed, if they were damaged, that would be understandable. But under BAFE he should of made them safe.
If they had been used, he should of done a DTR to empty and refill and inspect.

I suspect I know why.

That must have been an unusual CO2 extinguisher, all the ones I’ve seen have to have their trigger held for the gas valve to be open.

the old ‘strike head on ground’ water type would continually discharge but in those the plunger breaks a glass container that mixes with the water making gas that pushes the water out.

So he had a CO2 dancing round the floor and not really doing the job, it may of put out a smaller fire.

The old strike on the ground units, used a sealed cartridge, what when struck would fill the air space with CO2. Thus forcing the fluid out.
The glass container contained a additive to aid fire suppression.

The draw back with that type was.
Once it was operated it would continue to operate. This is why stored pressure units came in.

A Fire extinguisher should be used if you think you can tackle the fire.

The fire extinguishers is an aid to escape.


So if it is used to smash a window to allow the alarm to be raised, or to allow escape, or batter down a door it has done its job.

I used to be allowed to show how a 6lt.6kg unit be used to remove laminated glass from a window frame.
