Let's say we switch over from oil to EV's tomorrow...wouldn't that cause a catastrophic shock to the economies of oil producing nations?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea...but it will have consequences for hundreds of millions of people me thinks which maybe needs a little thought too?

Please stop talking rubbish. That tesla owner‘s battery is faulty - it is still under warranty, I expect. I strongly suspect you are simply making things up, trying to justify your dislike (even hatred) of EVs.

Re the laptop - I expect the battery has a poor BMS, if at all, that has allowed over-charging and the battery has basically been cooked.

Maybe read the instructions? Many power tools (especially those with three-hour chargers) explicitly inform the owner/user to not over-charge the battery.

The reason why laptop batteries dislike being plugged in (and this is a very common failure mode that happens to all brands) - is nothing to do with being overcharged or the BMS.
It is because this charges them up to 100% and keeps them topped up in a fully charged state.

Charging a lithium battery above 80% and draining it below 30% puts the battery under a lot of extra stress and shortens its life.
The battery will last a lot longer if shallower charge cycles are used, and if the battery is being stored for any period of time it should be done in a semi discharged state.
Even with this there are a finite number of cycles a cell can perform before it is dead for good, that is simply the nature of the chemistry.

Any decent power tool charger will not over-charge the battery, for the most part even the cheap and nasty lithium chargers have some basic protection built in to stop over charging as this can be extremely dangerous and cause the battery to explode.
The charger will typically charge the battery up to a specific voltage and then reduce the charge rate down to zero, but it will keep the battery in this fully charged state, which is not ideal. Hence the warning.

youve just done exactly what the many others green warriors do. They forget that you will still need oil for all the plastic bits in your electric car, your jogging shoes, your fancy phone, water proof coats etc

Errrr yes but the idea is you produce it, containing the methane as fuel, not releasing into the atmosphere. The issues are manipulating the temperatures and pressures to get it to surface as gas, remember a few years ago gas was going to be our savior!

Ah ok, so we can now listen to the warnings from Toyota because, you know they don’t have an axe to grind with their hybrid tech that they pioneered and would like us to keep using,

But any other warnings (around maybe oil, climate etc) can all be safely ignored.

It seems quite hard to get 8kg of lithium that lasts the lifetime of the car, versus, say using 1000kg (per year) of something that comes from under the North Sea, then needs piping ashore, refining and then transporting to stick in your car.

(Just for the record I’ve no real opinion either way on climate, on my list of reasons for choosing an ev it was somewhere below the colour of the ashtrays in my decision making process. I work quite a lot offshore and just come back from one of the UK largest oil storage facilities so I’m not at all anti oil, seeing as it pays a good part of my wages.)

A mate was going on today about how he had been looking at second hand electric vans and could not believe how cheap they were. He showed me and yes, a 21 plate, 10,000mile VW Transporter, Maxus, M.B. etc can be had from a main dealer for about 15K plus vat. Diesel ones are a hell of a lot more. Are they that bad or is the demand not there?

Mostly no demand.
Electric vans are fairly limited, so the actual use for them has quite a limited scope.
You're really looking at applications that are mostly in town, with limited payload, and the companies who fit that usage profile will be buying/leasing new.

A quick Google seems to show the electric Transit and Vivaro have a realistic range of about 150 miles. Not much use as a delivery / tradesman van, but could be a good option to convert to a camper / day van when the time comes to get shot of my current Vivaro conversion, and considerably cheaper than a diesel replacement.

That sort of range would work fine with my general use, and even if you've got to stop and charge it, the kettles in the back.

Same on an EV camper could make sense in the summer (or if you go on holiday somewhere sunny), charge when you're driving and when you're parked.

Your type of usage could work: medium weight, low mileage needed between charges (and if it's a cloudy day you just stay where you are for another night)

That's an interesting point. Most solar set ups I'm aware of on camper vans are used to charge a 12v leisure battery.

Is there a set up that can be used to put power directly into an EV van battery, or do they require a different sort of input? And would it even be worth doing?

Fairly reliable.

Delivery/tradesman are probably some of the more suitable uses. Local delivery vans don't do a high mileage, and very few tradesmen actually do large distances.
My neighbour had 3 of the early Nissan vans with quite a limited range, and if the drivers were very frugal, they could eek out a full days delivering around Edinburgh, although lunch breaks were planned around charging points to give them a top-up.

Camper is probably one of the less suitable uses, as the weight of the battery, especially the larger batteries, eats into the payload. So unless you want a very basic camper and carry very little water/luggage, it's going to be over weight quite quickly.
