Wish I'd got the weldquip one, but didn't see it when I'd been searching, as its stupidly good value with the regulator

Cheers. I thought the weldequip on was a good buy until you posted £50. I’ll go for that one with the reg. .

How long could you live with the smell, though?

Wash the bit you want too use in a strong solution of Dettol & sodium bicarbonate, giving both sides a nail brush scrubbing .
Then leave it to soak overnight in the cleaning solution . Next morning give it a few rinses & let it dry naturally away from light & heat ..

Well i got the last one in the shop, had a quick mess with it earlier on an old mountain bike frame. It works greatView attachment 120849

Guess that will be 4130 Cr-Mo about 1.2mm thick, in which case job well done. What size rod and amps did you use?

Cro-mo is standard for cheaper end of market. Reynolds and Columbus etc is your very thin light double and triple butt’d stuff. If it’s a heavy bike then it’s more likely what’s known as a ‘gas pipe special’ or more derogatory BSO - bike shaped object.

They knocked their 24L compressors down to 30 something quid once. Occasionally there is a bargain to be had.

As I started this I thought I better have a go...

Welded some (2mm?) thick Unistrut together for some brackets in the shed. 75A on 2.5mm 6013 Superon might have been a bit high...like a 'kin hole punch.

Around 40A seemed about right eventually.

Pity I can't weld very well!

I blame the galvanizing, the cheap slag hammer, the sunshine, lack of tea...

If you need any more excuses just shout out, I've collected many over the years and they are re usable ;-)

Looks like 1.5mm unistrut? Could have bought some angle brackets but a good excuse to get the welder out.

To be fair to it once I could hold an arc it felt good. In the hands of a proper welder I reckon it could do great things. For it's size it's incredibly powerful.

Had a play a bit later just laying down beads on some old angle iron I found and marginally better. Again I blame the paint/mill scale! Even though I'd taken a flap disc to it. Lack of penetration too.

I'm going to go and watch the arc tutorials on here and have another go.
