Definitely I would say.
Bear in mind the quill in these machines is not sprung it is counterbalanced.

I was thinking about the z-axis, yes, I found that clamp, but I thought there was some other structure in addition to the handwheel
I'll take the cover off now to look at the pump.

These things are built like brick turd houses. Doubt there will be much wrong with the pump, probably carp in the oil. Takes a very heavyweight oilI was thinking about the z-axis, yes, I found that clamp, but I thought there was some other structure in addition to the handwheel

Update on the spindle situation. Cannot find what oil seal this machine is meant to have.
Ideally it wants a 5/16" thick seal but no such thing seems to exist.
I need to strip the spindle again and see how the ⅜" seal was working before. Maybe it's been modified. Who knows. All I know is a new ⅜" thick seal rubs on the spindle.

Can't be. The oil pump is internal. The coolant pump is external.

Last night I tackled the front pulley which Drives the splined spindle. It was a bit dry sounding and had some play but I expected to find a method of preload.
And wow what a piece of engineering just the pulley.
I didn't take photos unfortunately (grease everywhere) but the pulley is basically three parts.
A hollow shaft which is attached to a large lump of cast iron at one end. The hollow shaft is ground, and has a thread with a keyway through the thread at the end.
The cast iron plate is ground and doweled to the head of the machine, secured with 6 whitworth bolts. There's an internal grease port that links up with the grease manifold and supplies grease directly to the bearing assembly.
A balanced crown pulley that has an internal keyed sleeve. The pulley has threaded studs sticking out of it to attach the top cap.
A loose cylindrical roller bearing sits in the sleeve, a Hoffman RXLS5. It has no outer race, it runs directly on the sleeve. Sleeve is ground.
An opposing cylindrical roller bearing is pressed in at the other end of the pulley and trapped by the sleeve.
Inbetween these bearings inner races is a piece of tubing with ground faces and a ground shim to make up a preload stack.
I wasn't about to take the sleeve out so I cleaned all the old grease (still pliable) one gave the bearing a good dose of WD40 to break down any dirt and dry grease.
The two bearings are of different sizes however I neglected to make a note of the trapped bearing. It was Hoffman and of course imperial. The bearing that is free moving in the hub assembly is an RXLS5.
The bearing assembly then slides over the hollow shaft.
There's is then a very fancy locknut with about 10 holes in it but one it threaded.
So you screw it on to the hollow shaft and it preloads the bearings. Viola, no more play. There is then a keeper with 10 more holes and a keyway notch. This drops over the hollow shaft and you realise the 10 holes are not evenly spaced you turn the keeper until one of the holes lines up with the threaded hole in the locknut. A small cap head screw secures the keeper to the locknut and the locknut is prevented from undoing itself by the keyway notch of the keeper acting on the hollow shafts keyway.
The final piece is the top cap of the pulley which has the spline machined into it.
It is larger than the crowned section so stops the flat belt from ever slipping off.
It also has an integral vibration/flexion mechanism.
Each of the holes that accept the studs on the crowned pulleys, has a bonded in rubber bush.
This means that the spline drive is actually damped from the crowned pulley.
Whether this is to improve surface finish or stop chattering on the spline from the hook&loop flat belt I don't know but ingenious design.

Mill is all back together and running much better. Could nip the bearings up slightly but time will tell. Keyways and side milling are what it struggled with before, lack of rigidity. Will give some steel a go tomorrow, before sticking the dividing head on and completing another job.
Hi Brad thanks for your pictures and videos on this machine. I just purchased one and fixing it up. If possible could you please take a close up photo of the spindle speed plate as mine is missing. Also haven’t seen one like mine with handles on both ends of table.

Yours is probably still an 18" vertical mill but not what they called the production model.
The production model has the table traverse handle at the front.

Where did you source the flat belt? Is it seamless? To be honest I was just going to go for a multi v belt
