Some progress on the Archdale mill. Pulled the quill and spindle.
Bearings are metric taper roller bearings.
One at each end of the quill along with an imperial oil seal.
Timken 30209 P5 bearings on order. That's the best I could get in that size. We will see how it goes, I think they will be adequate for what I want to do.
Looking online at bearing options, there's a possibility this once had the next size up bearing - 24.5mm thick instead of 20.75mm.
There's room on the bearing journals for that, whether the stack height would work out I would have to look into.
There's a few more precision options in that size. Gamet comes up, £700 a bearing. I think not.

Interesting. My Harrison mill has timken bearings in the horizontal spindle and in the vertical head spindle.
355X/354B and 28137-28315B in the vertical and 355-354A in the front end of the horizontal.

I wonder what options there are for its form of retention? To me, it is either screwed in or pressed in. What mitigates against the threaded option is there is no visible means of unscrewing it. Is any part of the outer bearing race visible if you look down the other end of the quill? Any notches in the outer race seat to allow a drift? Maybe the safest way to proceeed is to assume it is threaded and put a strap wrench on it and try to rotate it. If it turns and unscrews, great. If it turns but does not unscrew, then it is likely a press fit but with little thought given to disassembly without harming the bearing. Original factory assembly would be OK as nothing would push on the inner bearing race going in.
Potentially, make a clamp that goes around it (bore out a piece of plate the exact diameter of the nose piece, cross drill for a clamping bolt, slit with a hacksaw). Clamp it on tight and then you have something to hammer on or press against. As the quill is a lot longer than the nose piece, a similar clamp made of wood, say 2" thick, would probably work OK there.

It's an Archdale 18" Production Vertical Milling Machine. Supplied by Alfred Herbert (they possibly manufactured it, I'm sure they acquired Archdale at one point.)
I will scan the very very brief manual in tonight if it's at home.

I saw that you also have an Archdale milling machine. I also just bought one, but mine is missing some parts... If you could help me find out what the missing parts are, I would be very grateful.
I think two wheels or axles are missing for the handwheel drive, I don't know exactly, but I can't turn that part off to the right (I think this would fix the height of the main spindle). I took some pictures so you can see what I have...

I have not had that star wheel apart I'm afraid. But there should be some gearing in there which when you pull the handles outwards away from the main body of the machine, engages a coarser/faster feed. When pushed in close to the body of the machine (no gap behind handwheel) a fine feed is engaged.

Do you mean rotational axis of the spindle or linear z travel of the quill?
The linear z axis of the quill is fixed in position by the handle on the bottom left (front) of the spindle housing. It clamps the quill in place.
There is no method on these machines to lock the rotational axis of the spindle.
Obviously a countershaft and pair of gears missing there??
