Bedford TK

It's a mystery at the moment! I can't see any way that it fits on and the only picture I have is of the whole truck and very unclear. It almost looks as if they are from another vehicle but I can't think what that would be and how they came to be on the shelf with all the other Bedford bits: very strange. I know I'm getting older but this is ridiculous!

I couldn't find any TK pictures in your link but enjoyed their other projects anyway.

I wonder if they TJ parts that I have accumulated by mistake.

Are you sure they are Mudflaps? I have seen odd bits of rubber hanging from the engine inspection flaps, or between them and the rear engine cover panel. Ive also seen them bridging the gap between the mud wing and chassis. My KM has extra rubber on the engine flaps instead of the little wings. I've seen artic units with extras that seem to serve no purpose.

You're right, they may not be mudflaps but I can't see any obvious location for them. They are really heavy, like the rubber you find on older stuff. I wonder if I picked them up by mistake when I bought all the new panels (doors etc) ages ago. The guy had a whole lot of TJ trucks there and I wonder if these are the mudflaps that go on the back of the TJ wing. Next time I go to my TK guy I'll take them and ask him. An interesting clue is that they do not have any blue paint on them. Nearly everything from the original truck was covered in it.

In other news I refitted the main throttle bar. It runs right across the cab from the driver's side and is not easy to photograph. It rotates in nylon bushes and I am two short to finish the linkage at the moment. The components were blasted and then zinc plated. One of those surprisingly awkward jobs with a whole lot of clips, spacers and springs that have to be assembled in the right order and parts that have to be the right way around. Thank goodness for taking photos, you can NEVER do too many.

I managed to pick up a set of indicator/wiper/light switches in better condition than mine so dismantled them both, cleaned the contacts and built the two into one. It even has the self-cancelling feature now!

Hi Myles, I can help you with the rubber mudguards, they are of your TK, they attach to the hinged engine side panels, and hang down to touch the aft mudguards. The hole in the end of one of the support rods is mounted to the fwd hinge lower bolt, and the flange in the rubber with holes bolts to the hinged panel along 2 seams. Hope this helps, if you need pictures Ill take some and try posting them for you.

Brilliant Andrew, I'll check that out. The original truck did not have these flaps and that is probably why I did not remember them. The new side panels that I bought probably had the flaps attached and that also accounts for the green paint.

I'll have a trial fitting when I get some daylight and get back to you if I need photos.

The replacement cab I bought all those years ago came with a device to raise and lower the driver's seat which I though would be a useful addition to the truck

I'm SO glad I took those before pictures, it was quite complicated to put back together with a whole collection of brackets, frames, levers and spacers.

It's all held together with these clips :

I'm not sure what they're called but luckily could be reused by first flattening them with a hammer and the pressing into place with a socket and a g-cramp

Push-fix. Spire clips are for taking a self tapping screw, i.e. they're a semi-captive nut.

Mystery solved, thanks Andrew, found some pictures. Not sure what the point of them is though, the flaps are sitting above a full mudguard.

They are, of course, designed to rub through the lovely shiney paint job on the mud wing unless every gap is right!

I think you're right, I probably won't fit them, don't really see the point.

Meanwhile getting on with that headlining. Put on a layer of woven mat, really just to give a decent surface to glue to



The whole thing is a little heavy now but certainly strong and rigid; I just hope it has enough flex to get it back into the cab!

Replaced some lights in the workshop with some LED strips. They are really good, great light and only a few ounces each. About £12 each off eBay from a chap called Shining Wang! Less than £10 if you buy 10 at a time. I shall get some more.

Two new 36W strips on the right and the dimmer, yellower light on the left, that's a 200W bulb :-

Lights look good....but those rafters need packing with stuff you'll never use though! Most of my house is LED....the new bulbs are amazing compared to the old ones that used to take 10 minutes to warm up!

Those steel strips were there when we bought the house, so the previous owner kindly pre-loaded some crap into the rafters saving me the bother. Strips of beading for plasterboard from when the house was built in the early 90s!

Here's a question for the team...

The old gear-lever was bent so I bought a secondhand one and had it powder coated black only to discover that the new one is 9/16" UNF where it screws in at the base and the old one is 5/8" UNF. Any ideas about adapting one size to the other? There's not enough 'meat' to make an adapter out of a 5/8" bolt. Could I use a 9/16" helicoil, they are both 18 tpi? I could get a 9/16" nut tigged to the base. Is there something clever I haven't thought of?

An extra inch or so will make no difference, turn up a male / female adaptor from a bit of hex bar - 9/16 female one end 5/8 male the other and screw it on with a bit of loctite.

I knew there must be be a simpler solution. Out of interest, would my helicoil idea work? Can you make a thread one size smaller with a helicoil as long as the pitch is the same or are the thread forms different?
