So far today I’ve made the two post mounts.
I sat pondering for a while how to secure it where it doesn’t look like an eyesore. This was the way I came up with

Annoyingly I Made my jig wrong yesterday. I forgot to account for the fact the post is 100mm wide and the jig was 50mm wide and I went to the centre of the jig. Luckily I’d made the it originally mount in the centre of the main post, I chopped some off the end and now it sits near the edge but I can’t see it being an issue at all

Mimicked the design for the levering system for the second gate.

Tried the gate again installed. It’s got very slightly bowed from welding at the top far corner. I think I can tweak it or worse ways the lever system will push it down and the magnet will still secure it just right.

Thoughts on the motor right there? I can’t see it being an issue but worth an ask in case anyone else sees it being an issue. I was then thinking abkjt having the lever arms right at the top of the gate. At least it has two lots of force keeping it shut. Rather than all the force in one location on the gate

I think I'd have mounted the actuator much higher - maybe the half way point. It would keep it out of the wet zone, leaves, snow etc

That’s a valid point although I don’t have any trees or leaves around. The likelihood of snow is very minimal but the potential issue of trying to support the end of the ram when there’s no structural supports near the centre would be much more of an issue for me. I have mounted it down low for that reason and I hope I don’t eat my words. I’ve had it sort of running today but I need to work on the programming, something isn’t right. It opens and closes perfectly. Just need to sort the lever system out now and magnet brackets.

I agree - I'd be inclined to mount it up a bit higher. Down on the floor it's less noticeable and you're possibly more likely to trip over it. I'd not mount it hip height though because you'll just walk into it then!

Depends on whether you're happy with the aesthetics but I'd personally have made the cross-braces (acknowledging the fact you potentially don't have many materials to hand) out of box because it would have been much more rigid than flat bar. It could have also acted as a support for the rams then. Using the flat bar in that orientation will probably cause them to bow in/out.

Kim is there a reason the gate ram is outside of the gate? Seems a bit vulnerable, would it not be better on the inside?

If your worried about stiffness as mentioned above due to the flat bar. Use sikaflex to glue in the boards, and screw them too, itll not move anywhere
