Am I the only one who thinks that modern Western civilization is degrading?

Due to the war, many of our enterprises have left for Europe. But it is easiest to do business in Poland. The hardest thing is in Germany. Few have made it to Britain and I have no feedback.
My respect and esteem to all those who still risk producing in such conditions.
We have some freedom in Ukraine for now. Although the government is trying in every possible way to tighten the screws despite the resistance of society. Do not forget - Ukraine is the birthplace of the idea of freedom and anarchy in the good sense of the word

IIRC Werner ladder told in a 60 minutes interview about 15 years ago, that
75% of the price of the ladder is for lawyers & insurance.
II heard similar for a Cessna 150 just before they stopped building them.

I thought lawyers were hatched & bred in the UK, exported to over here.....

In our country, after permanent crises, young people enroll en masse in law and finance departments. As a result, we also have 5 lawyers and 10 economists per 1 employed person. As a result, they cannot find employment in their specialty because they are not needed in such numbers. Therefore, they work as waiters.

They were written after an accident/death, to fix the problem.

It usually takes a death or two to change the decades old ‘this is the way we have always done it’ mentality.

It is perfectly possible to design stuff in such a way it is safe in use, British (European and US) standards give an awful lot of guidance to ensure you can. Its there for a reason, developed over decades of experience. Designers have been prosecuted for unsafe design when accidents have caused injury and death.

You can say all you like about common sense, Darwin etc - but one day you too will lean just too far, misjudge a step over a gap, think you can slip your fingers in and clear something before a clamp comes down, that the defective guard switch you bodged out won't matter - but a moments inattention and you too might be sat in A&E, knowingly or unknowingly, or taking that half day out with an undertaker.

And worse, you could take out someone, a few others, with you who weren't actually doing anything wrong.

We had a safety video offshore, which actually seemed pretty counter intuitive. It started off giving details of how many people died every year just getting out of bed. Trips and falls etc. And how many died falling down the stairs in the morning. And several other scenarios.

And then it went on to state that the few safety knobs who proclaim that we can be 100% accident free are actually pretty ignorant, and quite possibly dangerous…

I still can’t remember quite why they showed us the video.

20 odd years ago I was working in a LMCO factory in Texas on JSF/F35 - the amount of safety briefings, equipment, etc - and then main man of that part of the project rolled in late one day with a broken arm . . .

The problem in the west is compensation culture. Every time anybody gets hurt, in any way, they want to sue, and get money.

The ‘ambulance chaser’ mentality that we imported from the USA is the cause of much of it. And thus everything that we make, or use, or play with etc, has to be insured against injuring someone.

I once worked with a guy in the US whose father had had a very successful ladder manufacturing business. As time went by health and safety became more and more invasive. He was legally obliged to put warning stickers on every ladder he sold.

It got to the stage where there were 13 different stickers on each ladder. I forget what they all said but some were absolutely insane, such as ‘Do not climb this ladder without leaning it against a wall” or words to that effect.

We were always told we could halt any operation, task, job etc, if we felt it might be dangerous or could cause harm.

Of course, we rarely did, it was more than our jobs were worth.

The hypocrisy was monumental, between what management taught, and what they actually did, or expected us to do. Men died, in our company (mod edit: company name removed) due to that attitude.
