Why do you need an extinguisher for a gas that is in its self capable of putting fires out?

If it blows up (IE the cylinder fails) with you in the car your dead any way either from the rapid expansion of the gasses or the flying metal bits.

Open the cylinder valve?

a, it will put any internal fire out
b, it will stop the cylinder getting over pressured & exploding.

I would guess that a car fire would take a long long time to get a cylinder hot enough to rupture.

The other reasoning is to cover non-inert gases, they "generalise them" with regards to safe handling in fires, except for acetylene which is a whole different kettle of fish...

Opening a hot or heated cylinder isn't an option, the first one is to put the fire out, secondly, do you always carry your cylinder key to open the cylinder and can you find it quickly enough?
Thirdly, can you aim the cylinder at the fire to put the flames out?

After a fire the cylinder has to be quarantined and checked by the supplier before use, the tags on BOC and other suppliers cylinders aren't just for the cylinder age and retest date, they should also be heat sensitive and are checked by upon retesting/recharging...

It wont be hot when you open it. If it was you would already be dead.

No aiming needed. It would fill the car completely. Oh & yes you can aim it. I once used my BOC bottle to put out a chimney fire.

Easier till you have to clean the car out after. At least the mig gas will leave no residues. Used a powder one once, yuk what a mess that left.

Hi, just thought I'd drop a line to say that I got my Volkszone offer BOC account through, so it's still going. It works out as has been previously said at £40 the first year rent and approx £30 a fill on a Y sized bottle.I haven't read the small print yet but I got the impression that as long as I had a refill in the first year I didn't have to pay rent on the second, but as I say not 100% sure on that. To be honest I thought the deal was great anyway.I just turned up at my local depot in my Econoline Day-van chucked the bottle in the back and that was it.No compressed gas stickers asked for or fire extinguishers. To be honest again,it never crossed my mind because the chap there didn't say anything, it was only when I read again on here that that might be an issue. Still the whole offer was apparently a test by BOC to see how the word of an offer such as this gets about on the web.It was only advertised initially for 3 weeks and the rest has been done by sites such as this.I did name drop and thank you very much for putting me on to it.Unfortunately they have no idea whether the deal will go on for any longer then 2 years. Here's hoping, and I hope I haven't repeated to many other people who have already written in to you. Cheers

The first people to take this offer up must now be very close to renewing for the 3rd year.

So I guess we will find out in the next 2 to 3 weeks from them. I think Alistair was the first member to publicly take up the offer on 5/10/09. So thats 4 weeks away. But he has not posted for about a year.

Just to let people know, I rang up the direct sales and spoke to a lovely lady called Jade.

She advised me that the Volkszone offer is still ongoing and that it takes them 24 hours to sort paperwork etc and then they will give you a call to sort things and then send paperwork etc.
