The client (a mate of mine) is happy to leave the holes and go with the chem black finish.

Meanwhile my cunning plan didn't work.

I guessed two litres ought to do it (that's all I have) but it just doesn't quite reach the top of the metalwork. I could pack out the sides with <something> or heat and bend the sides but the easiest thing is to build a shallow trench and line it with plastic. A smaller gutter would do it but that's more effort than just making something out of parts I have lying around. I'd also like it to be as deep as possible.

So I made a dip tank with a narrow bottom, slight flare and deep enough to also get a brush in there.

Lined with plastic (found a roll of this stuff lying in the road!)

Last look at these side shelves after rubbing down with acetone, rior to blacking.

Acetone also takes off this stain quite nicely

Cleans it up a treat. Last look at my favourite T shirt. White Rabbit Productions, interesting story involving Me, Take That and Jason Donovan. We digress...

All rubbed down and ready to go.

Didn't get too many pictures of the actual process for obvious reasons. Dipped for 20-30 seconds, brush, agitate, dip etc.

Finally the support arms.

All done!

Quite a spectacular difference but a photo doesn't do it justice. Light plays on it and really gives it a beautiful sheen. Should be even better with a flash coat of acrylic varnish.

I just hope it doesn't rust solid overnight.

don’t forget this is not a fence post or a garden feature, it’s going around the telly in the front room so he’s gonna sit and stare at it. If I was making it for me, I’d do the very best I possibly could and I don’t see why I should compromise on that for anyone else.

yeah ther’s a number of options. Black csk screws look nice. Nice but not “perfect”. Hey ho, what’s done is done.

be interested to know what that strange patterning is under the scale though. My guess is not all box section would have it, looks like a manufacturing flaw. Something like a drive wheel marking it as it is being drawn(?).

So on to the lacquer. Tricky bit is how to manoeuvre it in such a small space. I fitted some little wooden legs so I could spray it all in one go.

Keeps it flat and stable and allows me to pick it up and get it out of the way.

Still an awkward thing to get all the way around to paint. Some of the joints had a line of rust around the welds which I touched up with paint then rubbed down with acetone.

Brings out the colour of the gun blue really nicely.

I still have enough stock to make these up with the same finish as the last lot to match. I'm hoping to video it this time not because it might be interesting but just to get me started on this YouTube malarky.

Logs want to be carted about and stored in a pot that's got a solid base, to contain all the sawdust, splinters, moss, bark, insects etc that comes with the logs. Also wants to be in carry-able sizes so can be brought in directly from log pile to fireside with no double handling.

A cement bucket/gorilla tub is ideal but understandably a bit uncouth. A simple plywood box is pretty decent and easy to make.

Unless this is for display only of course!

is it safe once done if yes get job done get paid (you can add in a few touches even say this will be just for desplay if required)

I have enough stock left but didn't want to chop it up willy nilly so used Sketchup to calculate a cutting list.

I have 18400mm of stock as shown (4 off 2500, 2 off 1800, 4 off 1200). I need 11000mm for 2 off log stores as shown.

In theory that should leave me with 7400 stock left which means I ought to be able to hang onto 4 off 1200 and one 1800. Now I write this, I am beginning to wonder if I could hang onto two of the 2500's without too much waste by using the smaller lengths first. In theory I might be able to take 2x800 out of 1800 and use the 200 offcut. In practice, real life will try to make it two or three kerfs too short!

This is real time working out and while it might seem to be a waste of time 1. It will save me some precious stock and 2. I can sit here in a reasonably warm spot drinking coffee instead of freezing my nuts off and chopping up icy cold steel.

Oh well. Turns out if I am feeling brave I can perform the cut as below and keep 2 x 2500 full lengths and 2 x 1250.

For this to work I need the overlap mitre joins to be no more than a 5mm kerf with a net gain of 50mm minus the actual kerf which should be more like 2mm.
