Headstock bolted down. Got the tumbler mechanism in and sorted. Works nice. Forgot to shorten the new grub screws but will do that tomorrow. Made a start on the carriage rack. At some point in its life something has dropped between the rack and rack gear and resulting in most of the teeth being chewed. Spent a good few hours straightening up 160 teeth. Little more work to do but otherwise all good.

Rack sorted and installed. Next job on the list is to strip clean and paint the screw cutting box.

What's the plan for the brass plaques? I've had good success giving a uniform coat of black spray paint then slowly scraping off the raised detail with a craft knife. Give it a gloss varnish and it's good to go. Takes ages but the results are well worth it compared to just polishing, here are some from when I did the Fobco.

I am planning to do the same. Just getting rid of the tarnish and giving a light clean up. Then will look in to spaying it

I use Molotow cans, graffiti artists love them, good flow rate, high quality German paint and no dust, dries to a lovely uniform coat. As always, use the same varnish as paint manufacturer or face a slow, wrinkling disaster like I did once!

My Mrs will kill me when she realises the amount of plastic bowls I have had out the house. Still needs must. Gear box now cleaned and ready for some paint.

I noticed on the front cover of the screw cutting box there was no gasket just metal against metal. Even thoe the box doesn't contain oil it does have oilers. So a gasket will stop it seeping out.

Managed to clean the spindle and bearing. And almost finished the gear case gasket.

Today's task. Got the gear box painted inside and a coat of primer on the outside. Got the gap bed installed. It takes about six days for the top coat to dry so in the meantime I can carry on with other parts like this tailstock.

Tailstock is in great condition. Barrel is in good order. Leadscrew is great. And the slides for the offset tailstock are good. Another nice adition is it comes with the facility to change the barrel nut if needed.

What a tosser of a day. Started work on the tailstock but found out the locking mechanism for the barrel lock had seized solid. After a good half a day fighting with it I eventually got it out. There is damage but easy repaired.
