My comment wasn't a dig either Paul, just a bit of light-hearted humour. In fairness, I think I've only ever 'acquired' one calor one and that was a dented one, the others were allsorts of weird and wonderful names from all over the country.
I agree we probably shouldn't be destroying them but there's just so many nice things begging to be made from them .

no problem, the only point I was making was just to be careful about broadcasting our intentions re old gas bottles.
note I said 'our' .......
I don't let the calor rep in my workshop either, for obvious reasons, although i don't think any I have used in the past are theirs, but I'm not 100% sure.

Not sure at all about that one, wouldn't have though so as the gas co has probably sold them to the yard as they are damaged. Heres a point I have often wondered about, as you know the suppliers (calor, shell, etc) have to regularly test every bottle and presumeably at some point in a bottles life they will fail, ok, where do they go or what do they do with them?
Perhaps some end up in your scrap yard?
There is also a guy on the net who openly advertises heaters made from gas bottles, I am guessing he must have a ligitimate source of legal bottles.

I tried to source some bottles legimitley a while ago, asked about decommissoned bottles and was told that very few are and are normally reconditioned and any that are decom. could not be sold/given to me on Health and safety grounds.

I'm not going to get prudish about cylinders (though I am a stockist) but Calor has a fund that pays a fiver to charity for every stray cylinder returned to the network.

I had the same obstacle when trying to source an old hospital bed (the type that jack up) to convert into a rise and fall work table / bench, couldn't let me have one in case it collapsed on me and I sued them!!!

I found a few links of gas bottle burners too.

The whole H&S issue brought in because of EU rules is a nightmare these days. In my business I have had people moan at me about H&S when I stood on a chair to get a photo.
When I did I.T. you couldnt buy old PC's or MAC's and had to watch 6 month old machines be put in the skip as they were all written off as a TAX loss. I know for a fact its still going on. Everyone is trying to be really green apart from when its considered a tax loss.

I try to recycle everything as much as I can. Old bottles that are rotting in peoples gardens should be recycled rather than binned or left to rot.

Yes you are right about the binning of 6 month old pc's, what a waste! All in the name of profit via a tax loss.
Like you I try to make use of anything found or aquired, although sometimes it would be easier and cheaper (taking into account man hours) to go out and buy it instead, but not a lot of satisfaction in that is there?

Evening all,
Ive been watching this thread with interest as ive been given a 15kg bottle by a builder friend who found in a house that had been empty for 10 years so i don't feel quite as guilty cutting it up...........and on the other point of repairing/reusing things,im in the situation that i cant afford to buy new things very often so i often have to salvage stuff and use my 'manhours' so to speak to be able to get things made.

God that sounds like im going for the sympathy vote...sorry everyone

paulmowers - yeah, money is far from the issue. A day spend doing welding for me in real terms is a waste of my time. I could earn me so much more if I were working for example. However all work and no play.

As another side note. At school (23 years ago (am I really that old?)) I did a lesson called 'Environmental Studies'. Did everything about global warming - recycling, pollution etc. Its kind of ingrained in me to recycle. I feel bad for almost everything I throw away. Sometimes I hate this 'throw away' society.

Hello, I will just say calor and the other suppliers involved should be brought to book for the way they handle the matter of bottles we no longer need, they should pay for every bottle returned, this concerns the enviroment, we should not be seeing these bottles dumped all over the place. big cats again getting away with murder

Maybe because the hirer paid a deposit for the privelige of useing them. The deposit easily covered the manufacturing cost when new in the quantities calor had them made. When you finished with the bottle or changed supplier they dont wana give you any £ back.
I used to be a dealer in gas refils 20yrs ago, a plain (no company name on it) exept for its tare weight and id s/nos etc.
A few of us clubbed together to get a container full from Italy IRC of 15kg cylinders About £50 ish each then
