Calor Gas Valve Removal

Each cylinder will have a serial number and related valve/cylinder test certificate held by the owner to help maintain customer safety. In the past Calor and most others have relied upon trust worthy folk to continue returning for refills or simply bring back the empty thus minimizing "rogue cylinders" turning up.

Nowadays Calor will often require a fully refundable deposit (29.99) from non industrial customers and if you retain the paperwork will return your deposit in full.

And heaven forbid if you lose another bit of paper (very easy to do). Opps whats that calor, ching ching another £30 earned...

I often see ex pikey camps littered with calor bottles. Turn up one day, gone the next and the field has earned a total of X calor gas bottles. Sometimes left for weeks while the good old taxpayer sorts out a van to clear the site.

Would make sense for calor to offer a token reward for the safe return if their property!.......if they offered a £5 even without paperwork i wonder how many would be returned then? compared with Boc airliquid and airproducts even calor don't look bad

Plenty I'm sure, but it would encourage theft of cylinders even more wouldn't it ? The pikeys round here ( & coming to a place near you) would probably even resort to a whole new concept......cylinder ringing, could be a nice earner

What if there was a scheme where Calor offered to pledge £5.00 to charity though?

Don't worry I can take a bit of stick, what I meant was calor and the like should not just wash there hands when they have had your money and sold the gas, when the bottle is done with you should get your deposit back or at least a minimum payment, there is a scrapyard near me with a yard full and calor will not take them back. Chris....

If these are properly Calor branded (or Calor owned but specially re branded) they would be pleased to have them back. The more cylinders there are in circulation the less new ones they will need to buy thus keeping the prices better for all IMO.

If a cylinder deposit has been paid it is fully refundable providing you have a receipt to prove you paid the deposit in the first place.

I couln't bring myself to wave an oxy torch at a calor bottle!!!

I got min out easy, using 18" stillsons.

i done it yeaterday for an uncle, first i cut round the welds of the big round handle thingy to remove that (better access) then uses a big blue pipe wrench tho try and remove it but it wouldent budge, so *used another method*

Wow scary stuff

I will be removing the valve from one that has been in my garden for a while but no way would I recomend a flame to warm uo the threads

i would leave valve open for as long as possible ,with bottle upside down,then drill using coolant/cutting paste and using a slow speed on drill, .if available blow any remaining odour using compressor airline,or fill with water,then bottle is safe to cut,........hopefully ,so i'm told..........wouldn't use heat before washing or blowing out myself...

Bawjaws, that really isn't the ideal advice to offer, under no circumstances is using oxy/ace on a gas cylinder safe practice!

i guess the best method is to ratchet strap it to something solid and lever it off then for future methods

Well i've had a few bottles thats been a right sod to get the top off,heres what i did
1) once you get the bottle,open that valve and leave it a day or so
2) hacksaw that valve surround off it dont take long and a bit of 3 n 1 oil helps
3) once thats off do the same to the valve but get as close to the steel as you can reason being theres a plastic valve inside and you need to drill this out
4)drill out a big enough hole to fill up with water what drill you use is up to you,i use my cordless drilled a 7mm hole at 1st then used a step drill bit
5)fill up with water(enjoy the stink,but dont panic) leave for a few days
6)drain the water,then attack it with what you want
I hold no Responsibility if you end up this side of the moon if you do it wrong.
Going back to an early post about making wood burners,heres a tip,depends where you live but find out whos doing the oil fired boilers alot of replacement oil tanks are now switching to plastic from metal have a chat with them,because the price of scrap has fallen so low their be more than pleased if you take the old metal tank away for nothing,
i did 2 before last xmas now have loads of 3mm plate i dont know what to make next,lol

I made a stove from one of these a couple of weeks ago. To get the valve out jammed a long bar between the handles with a mate holding it and used a stilson to open it, took a bit of grunting but came off handy enough. Filled it with water for a day and then cut the door with a grinder. Ran it on wood for a day and built up some ash in the base then started it on waste engine oil. Just light a rag soaked in diesel in the bottom and then pour in some oil, the ash seems to help the burn, burns about a litre per hour and heats a 40ft container. Need to sort out a oil feed with a tap now.
