I think those photos are from "Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy" by Wayne Moore (of the Moore Tool Company). It's a really interesting book about how they got their machines accurate. I borrowed a copy off my boss and read it cover-to-cover. I haven't managed to find an affordable copy to buy (but I will buy one when I do), although I might (ahem) have found a PDF copy.
