The good neighbour has two small humans, who like Vark.
We do things that made mummy talk to daddy.
Like pink smoke.
Burning bubbles.

This year they both got "BIG" bars of choccy. 24" long.
The smallest one was allowed to have a few squares.
So image a small huma, holding the biggest bar of choccy, nibbling yje corner, as she held it.
Dressed up in her winter warm clothes.

As daddy drank some singing drink.

The stray which adopted us is in the doghouse. She is as good as gold using the litter tray, but never covers up the poop.
There was a bit of smell in our bedroom, couldn't find anything anywhere.
Then had a proper look.
Not only had the cat crapped on my wife's flip flops, she had covered it up with another pair of flip flops.

A serious question then fellas. Are cats really any good at getting rid of, or at least controlling, a rat population?

We have an issue with the wee devils but poison is out of the question due to having 3 dogs. Thus asking if a cat might be the answer.

It depends on the cat, one I used to have was a killer, but others I've had were scared of their own shadow. Fenn Mk4 traps sited and set correctly will be cheaper and more effective.

Best thing for ratting we had here was a Jack Russell cross.

Only one cat over the years has been any good. All strays this particular one wasn't at all vicious but a great ratter.

The rest just raise a paw, point and say "Reckon you need a cat!"

Using poison here at the moment. Bloody awful smell for a while mind.

Outside, although a few did get into the loft. I put poison up there but still concerned about where they die. I.e. smell or if one of the dogs found it.

Our cat is always on the hunt! He has caught rats, mice, birds, frogs, and a squirrel! I'd say if you have a lot of rats you need to trap them as the cat won't keep up. Find what they are eating and get rid of this if you can.

Pretty sure we have had squirrels in the loft. Trimming the trees helped.

One issue is I have a TT mains supply coming overhead to the house which makes a great tightrope. Similarly the power out to the garage and shed is overhead though relatively easy to sort those eventually.

I'd like to dig up the concrete path surrounding the house and inspect the footings where various extensions meet the original building. I reckon there's gaps there and where old clay services come through. All allow vermin access.

I did get some shed snake skins from a chap I knew a while back and that discouraged things in loft spaces. Always thought it'd be a laugh to drop a bfo shed python skin under the floor for an electrician / plumber to find!

Love or hate them, foxes are very good ratters.

A place I worked once had an amazing cat, I sat and watched him one lunch break staring at a circa 2in. square hole in an elderly, 18in thick, brick wall, he suddenly shoved his "arm" down the hole effectively up to his "arm pit" , stirred it about for a moment then hooked a large rat out from the depths of the hole.. He ran off with it in his jaws for dispatch at leisure, the rat making an 'orrible screaming racket !
I only wish I could have filmed this as it was very impressive to watch..

You want a yard cat (semi feral) lives outside always.

Our local cat sanctuary has a few they do rehome them sometimes but you have to understand what you are taking on.
