Look for anti freeze that's a killer for cats and they like it, someone drained a motor & left in bucket
But cats just go walkabout sometimes we had a tabby that did it about every 6 months disappeared for a week 10 days the just appeared again as if it was normal.
Think he had a holiday home

There was a campaign in the EU parliament to get bitterant added to antifreeze to stop it being so attractive to cats. I don't know how it panned out, but since we're not in the EU it won't apply anyway and I can't see our government being bothered. Shame, as it's apparently not expensive to do and solves the problem very neatly.

The antifreeze of recent times does not have the same methanol or glycol content & as you stated a bitter taste to it so is not so harmful ........ apparently .

Talking to a vet ..... It was common to find cats that hunkered down under warm engined cars with leaking drips of coolant or oil poisoning themselves by licking the stuff off their own fur

I am seriously thinking of putting a cat flap in our bedroom door! Sometimes he's in and out 10-12 times. He'll scratch to come in / get out. If I leave him long enough he can pull the (sliding) door open.

Often he'll come in, jump on my bedside table and drink water from his own giant Sports Direct mug. After a couple of minutes he's out again.

We've tried and he ignores it. He even has the exact mug next to his food bowl. Ignores it. He'll eat and either go outside for a drink or run upstairs for one.

Engrained behaviour I guess. The bedside mug has been his thing forever (previously a glass pint pot). Tbh we did the same for our previous cat. In the interim, after she passed on (at 24) and he came on the scene, we should have never started it again.

Ours just drinks water.

The previous one was SWMBO's baby before the kids. When it turned up as a stray 24+ years ago it got spoilt & we started it on milk even buying it special, cartoned "cat milk". It soon preferred / went onto water exclusively.

Interestingly when we had it in town for a couple of years it was the most scared cat ever. Turned up as a kitten still with stitches in from being speyed. In two years before we moved "to the country" it never caught a thing. Pretty much overnight it turned into a rodent killing machine when we moved to where we are now. It even changed physically with tufts growing out of it's ears.

Ours was the same. Not sure where I read this , but, Keep the water away from the food, ie across the room. It’s something to do with a primal instinct about contaminated water. Ours would be the same as yours and ignore water next to food, and drink from a glass in the bedroom ? We moved the water bowl and hey-presto he now drinks the water from the bowl !
worth a try with yours.

My kitten only gets water, Iv never met a cat drink as much as her. She will gulp it down like it’s the first one she’s had in days

I refresh it a lot and she’s almost as keen on her water as food(mix of dry and wet from day to day)

Our cats drink out a cat fountain, I was recommended by a friend. They never used to drink water in the house. It circulates the water through a filter and has different heights they can drink from.

The tom cat would only drink water from puddles outside or used to jump into the bath and lick up the used bath water.
The dame would jump up onto the wash hand basin and demand the tap turned on so she could lap up the running water.
Neither of them would drink tap water from a bowl.
We wondered if it was the chlorine smell so tried water from a water but in a bowl, that was no use either.

Just being cats was the conclusion we came to.

Yep I was worried she might have diabetes

If she gets wet food for a few days she’s ten times better Iv stopped buying the supermarket own brand biscuits and it has improved a lot

I always fill water bowl from Hot tap helps the chlorine level

When I had cats, one would drink water, from anywere, any time.
The other would only drink from her bowl. But only if the water was a day or 2 old.
