Don't like the idea of collars on cats too easy for them to snag on something as they are climbing or jumping. Think chip by vet is about the best thing you can do and if someone responsible finds it then you have a fair chance of being reunited.

We got Jasper de - flea'd , de - wormed & chipped the first day he came into our possession and took up the discounted annual care for meds .... worming \& flea treatments programmes @ £ 178 ... some discount 
Now almost at £ 900 later , we've got an affinity for the little sod , he's part of the family even the dog was pining for him when he went AWOL . .

That includes all the cat food & litter plus litter trays etc. to date & extra worming vaccination when I discovered two strange 15 mm long thin 1 mm thick black headed maggots in a massive three inch long stool full of beech leaves & twigs he passed after getting four days of cat fur ball paste treatment with his food .
It seems to have cleared up his painful to pick up tum & him only being able to eat for a minute or so and having to leave the food . By month three he was as skinny as ever , & in pain if you tried to pick him up ..... till the fur ball paste cleared him out ..poor little sod starving to deaath slowly but his intestines & stomach full of the leaves & twigs stopping him eating no wonder he'd only poo'ed a runny liquid .
The vet said in all his 40 years of small animal practice he'd never seen such maggots' nor known of a cat so impacted with leaves & twigs .. he mist have been close to dying of starvation to have eaten them .
He appears al right now ..is scoffing a 15 ounce can of cat meats in gravy each day plus two softish round chew sticks if he asks for them & could crap for the EU every day . .

Billy ex big balls seems quite content at the moment only thing to report is we've had to remove a couple of tics of him in the last week . One large mother of a tic and a small one , must be picking em up where ever he's kipping through the day . Although he's spending loads more time in the house .

Any vet supplied prescribed tick & flea spray should see him cleared of ticks , do his bedding and all the carpets too . It's a spring and humid weather event & can be all year round . If you have dogs do thm at the same time as well as their bedding.& in the car if you travel with them a lot .
Over counter products are not very good these days due to COSH rules & regs .
Don't be tempted to use sprayed on paraffin & other old wives tales for home made treatments as you'll like as not cause him no end of grief, irritation and could actually kill him after he licks it off whilst cleaning himself ..

I carry a tick remover , credit card sized device with a magnifying lens in my hard case wallet , it has a handy slide under the tick forked prong ( from www.lifesystem.co.uk many years ago , perhaps from " Go Out Doors " ) .
I've only needed to use it at a campsite near to Slapton sands , the wardens told us there was a tick problem due to the harvest time . I took eight ticks off our Goldie then used a vet recommended spray to dose her treat our caravan & car and once here at home on our latest mutt who had a small tick above his left eye .

It's always sleepy time for our tabby. She must sleep 20+ hours a day. I often wonder do they not get bored, but apparently not.

Our Jasper bites almost hard enough to draw blood most of the time , in the friendliest of ways of course. Had him hanging on with four set of claws and all his teeth to my bare foot at 05 .10 hrs this morning as I walked down the hall to the bathroom .
