My previous post along the lines of "where's the harm" was intended for minor speeding infractions, where the road conditions are otherwise entirely safe - but as the videos show, many people simply don't deserve to be let off due to their careless and/or dangerous driving...

I think 20 zones are a step too far, but probably does help keep most drivers below 30...

Fingers crossed it won't ever be one of your loved ones that gets hit by a speeding vehicle whilst "Getting in the way of traffic..."

There's an assumption though that any & every collision is the fault of the driver, and that the burden of responsibility for safety is exclusively that of the driver... when it is not.

As a 16yo on a moped, an old biker told me "it's no good being in the right, if you're the one lying in the gutter with your leg broken". As the vulnerable one, it is plain stoopid to place your life in the hands of a total stranger in a moving steel box! That entirely sensible, pragmatic view is simply not adopted, applied or taught to the mindless zombies wombling about (or cyclists).... and it should be. It is your own responsibility to take care of yourself!

Now, that doesn't mean that drivers dont need to look out for other road users - they really should. However, this persecution of drivers for the idiocy & entitlement of others - is going way, way too far.

"Speed Kills" is the convenient and incorrect mantra that has been pushed for decades (because in part speed is a measurable easy metric to use).
The reality - is that bad driving (as well as bad pedestrian and cycling behaviours) are the things that injure and kill - but to moderate and punish such behaviour requires PROPER policing... so instead we get civilian muppets using Scamera's to extort monies, while doing nothing but pay lip-service to genuine efforts to improve road safety.
Worse --we now have artificially low limits imposed - in a cynical move to both extort money, and to force an agenda to bully the motorist off the roads (without a viable environment or infrastructure that facilitates people being able to live and work without their personal transport.

Drivers - are being made out to be villains through a propaganda war to create that perception - to meet an agenda that has nothing to do with road safety or with saving lives.... that is just a convenient veneer to hide behind.

Whilst I agree with many of the previous posters that some of the burden of responsibility has to be placed with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders, there has to be some hierarchy of responsibility whereby the most damaging hold the greatest responsibility.

I suspect that many posters remember playing in the street as kids with fond memory. An opportunity that has been lost for the following generations due to our continual demand for personal car transport and ever increasing vehicle size and power.

It is also worth noting that over the past 50 years traffic volumes have significantly increased, as has vehicle size and power, yet little or nothing has been done to address these increases.

As far as I an aware the last law change as a result of vehicle progress was the introduction of the 70MPH motorway limit in 1965 as a result of high vehicle speeds.

Maybe it is finally time that King car was removed from its top spot and the streets returned to a safe place for our children and grand children to enjoy in safety.

Unfortunately that will require adaption and some changes for us all, starting with a reduction in overall speeds.

I undertook a black Audi blocking the outside lane of a dual carriageway. Wouldn't budge. I flashed him a few times. 40mph limit. Used to be a 70! Nobody - except maybe Dave sticks to 40! Black Audi was doing about 50mph. I was going a tad faster.
I don't like undertaking but as the road was clear and the Audi wouldn't budge I passed on the inside. Next thing I get blue flashing lights. There are more undercover traffic cars than marked ones now. They have gone from being a deterrent to a revenue generator. Young copper hopping up and down in anger. Demands I get in the back of his car. Gets on the radio and says he has been involved in a road rage incident!
The lady on the radio asks him against whom. Against me he says.
Apparently I gave him the middle finger which is crass and something I would never do.
I asked him which side of the road we drive on in the UK? No response.
I pointed out the only person in a rage appeared to be him
I also pointed out that if he wanted to give me a speeding ticket he would need to give one to himself as well.
Then he tells me I would get a driving asbo! No points on my licence but if it happens again my car is marked and they can destroy it. He wasn't happy when I told him it was a hire car.
I asked when I would get my asbo. Oh it will be in the post! Then he had another call come in and said he had better things to do - you can go now!
Funnily enough I never got that asbo
They are only meant to be given out when a member of the public feels threatened. For example boy racers doing doughnuts in car parks etc. I was quite proud to get an asbo at 53 years of age

a lot of towns (centres)have tried this with fully pedestrianised streets , seems to affect shopping though , there should be a happy medium some where surely ?

Not been that way for ages sadly.
I am sad enough to be able to recognise a hedgerow on a minute side road - stick me in a town I very quickly get lost

Funnily enough I too acquired an intention to prosecute last thursday , I'll put a little context in here a shortish stretch of dual carridge way
recently reduced to 40mph . A slight incline to a blind crest leading to a round about above another dual carridge anyway following another couple vehicles in the inside lane approaching the incline I can see full on amber beacons at the top of the crest so I move over to the inside lane thinking obstruction , highways / recovery vehicle etc. Nope when I clear the second vehicle and get full view it's a F****ng camera van on the verge with a window open ! . Yes the clocked me at 48 in a 40 now in all my years of driving I've never seen a camera van with full on amber beacons going whilst clocking people , is that even legal . I have sent my paperwork in admitting it was me driving and also a covering letter asking for clarification on the beacon scenario .
