Top gear has a lot to answer for, every road outside of a town seems to be a racetrack these days.

Unfortunately the scariest thing there is that in my experiance people are more likely to slow down for animals than they are for people, yet this is still the outcome.

Plenty of drivers will happily brush past a cyclist, runner, or pedestrian at 60mph with mm to spare, but then they'll slam on the brakes and stop to a crawl for a pheasant or pigeon.

What's the A465 Heads of the Valleys road like these days?, I used to travel it regular when going to Tredegar.

An unrecognisable nightmare due to 20 years of ongoing road works. They are widening it and making it into a lovely dual carriageway. But - there is always a but - the most difficult section running through the Clydach gorge now has a 50mph limit The old section was 60!

What's the A465 Heads of the Valleys road like these days?, I used to travel it regular when going to Tredegar.

They are still digging bits of it up! There are new bits, but the roadworks that has made that road a slow PITA for decades now - are still ongoing.
If they ever finish it, and IF they don't then stick a stupid 50mph limit on it (the Welsh Govt are such a bunch of ***** I wouldn't put it past them) then it might be a decent route.
As it stands though, it's likely to be quicker to use a different route (just like it has been forever to-date).

I used to travel it in the late 80's and sometimes stayed at a hotel called the Baverstock on top of a hill.

We tried it the once and found it ok till we got too Hirwaun and going down roads your unsure of with road arrows pointing towards you freaked me out enough never too try it again

I know it well, now a Jehovas palace...
Behind it there is a massive tank farm thing, part of the West Wales CNG import pipeline I think, lots of steel pipe welded together feeding the UK with Qatari gas...

Actually the bit from Hirwaun to the other side of Merthyr is a massive building site, dualling works came across Merthyr, one house I know of had a pile driver in their garden for weeks, I suspect no paintings left on a wall...
