I attended a EN 1090 information event today hosted/run by the TWI.

From my point a view it was very worthwhile, "busted" a lot of myths that are plaguing the industry and even corrected some misconceptions that I had.

The whole issue of RWC's isn't a scary as first thought, and its possible to have more than one (eg, an in house one for the day to day general stuff and a outside consultant for when a IWE is more suited)

Basically it's mostly just creating traceability and have a welding quality system in place so that you comply to EN 3834. Once I have had chance to digest the many presentations that were given I'll do a more in depth post

There's an awful lot of people not aware of EN 1090. Other fabricators, suppliers etc. I asked a few of our Clients about it over the last couple of weeks, and asked what their systems would be to check for compliance from next year...no idea yet.

One thing that come out of today Paul is that you need to engage a Notified Body ASAP. This will be the company who you choose/pay to come and see you when your ready. In the UK there are only 5 who can audit/Certify you to be able to comply to EN 1090 and allow you to CE mark in accordance to CPD (Construction Products Directive) but out of the 5 only 1 who can do the full job and audit you for EN 3834 for the CPR (Construction Product Regulation) which will be in force from July next year.

Given that there is so many companies who havnt even started yet and the fact that there are so few people who can provide the Audit its definitely going to be a first come first served scenario, with the underlying fear that if you don't comply by July next year you cannot legally sell your goods.

I wasn't aware that tack welding came under a WPS? Is this the case?

All WPS parent materials in the book relate to S355. Presumably the S355 procedures are acceptable for grades of steel below S355, including S275?

On the spec I've shown, surprised that it shows 1.0 wire....I would never do a FW on 10mm plate with anything other than 1.2?

Yes for EN1090 you need procedures even for tacking because tacking can effect the overall quality of the weld as its in the root. For EXC class 3 and 4 you even need procedures for gas/plasma cutting.

With the SpeedProcesses you can weld a lot thicker than usual but its also there because some fabricators might mainly use 5-10mm plate but very occasionally thicker so may not want to change wire. There are certainly no rules that say can't anyway

Same as a WPS for pipe welding then I suppose, seen it specified that tacks are to be ground at each end back to a feather edge now I think on.

Does this set of WPS's cover EXC 1 and 2 only?

Yes because you can only use "standard" welding procedures for up to exc 2. You still need to so a ITT and have a FPC manual

I need to get fired back into sorting this out, so much going on over the last few weeks to even look at it.

One thing I've not seen anything on, and the most simple bit of the process I guess, is what's the requirements for the actual 'marking' of the steelwork....does it have to be physically stamped or would we issue a certificate of compliance?
I've had 2 companies now ask about 1090 - more asking me for info than asking for compliance, but clients are starting to find out about it.

For exc 2 and 3 I think u stamp/mark the job but 4 you can't mark the work its all strange

Why does the WPS cover only machines S3, S5, S8? There are other Lorch Migs capable of welding as per the WPS?

You can only use the Lorch WPS booklet with the Lorch machine because all the WPS were qualified on the Lorch machines with our SpeedProceeses

How do they cope with being on an extension Matt, say 30-50M?

Yes but u have to name the machines in the standard WPS in order to make the valid. We also have an edition available for our P series

Matt, been doing quite a bit of work around 1090 lately, initially for our own internal use.

Are the programmes in Lorch machines written using UK cylinder mixtures (ie 3 component) or have you used the 2 component European type mixtures

The WPS's was made in Germany with German standard mixes, around 18% Co2 in Argon
