It's ok for quick little jobs and back garden trimming where I don't want to annoy the neighbors bud doesn't come close to a real saw on chunky stuff. You need to give it time to cut

It's just a cover on them I think, screws over some of the vent holes so less cooling.

I may have ordered a cheap chinese clone ms180 engine kit for nearly nothing. Unsure if it will arrive as a parts or assembled. Might try to get a flywheel, ignition, carb etc.. to make it run.
Occurs to me the ignition would normally be mounted on the plastic casing, so getting the alignment and therefore timing right could be interesting...

done one of these only a few weeks ago there a bit of a git taking all the mechine apart just to renew a set of rings and piston

Replacement tank arrived. I see it has a different tank vent that looks like a sintered brass filter.
If I blow into the tank with the fuel hose blocked no air is getting out the vent, so Im unsure it will work, maybe theres a one way valve to allow air in, only. Im a bit unsure if this vent is not working.
The original vent will leak if its on its side.
Amazons. Quality seems good as any other I have seen, except the chrome plated spark plugs will be fit for the bin!

can you put your mouth over the fuel tank filler and give a suck see if you can draw air in ?
tip the unit on a angle so the fuel is in the bottem right of the fuel tank you shuld be able to get a bit through if its working

mate of mine had a job on and got one of the parker chainsaws what looks very much like a husky copy and a tidy one at that comes with a 20inch bar

Getting fed up with the McCulloch cs380, its a pain to dissasemble and work on. Perhaps it knew I was going to abuse it again for hedge trimming! - but thats about all its good for..
Couple months back it had an issue where the primer was full of air and wouldnt work, but then magically worked and ran. Drained tank, ran dry and stored...
Today wanted to use it, same problem. Pressing the primer gives a noise of air even though the tank is brimmed. Pulled the return hose off the primer and it was *pssing* fuel so tank was getting pressurised. I'm not sure if that matters in this case... But I got soaked in fuel. When the 372xp was getting pressurised it still ran fine, but that doesnt have a primer.
With carb removed, the two hoses to tank are clear. Carb/float bowl blocked? Do these have a float?
Got the carb off but ran out of time so its sitting on the shed floor in bits..
and no it won't have a float .......

Many saws dont have a primer - my 020t and g372xp. Any reason I cant remove the primer and connect both tank hoses direct to the carb? - what do these other saws do differently so as not to need one?

H screw limits top end by regulating fuel mix. If you run it too weak it over revs and will end up seizing the engine.

My Husky always has air in the primer bulb but it never fails to start.. All it does is pull fuel into the metering side of the carb, most of my saws don't have primer bulbs and they start fine.

I would have thought part of the carb design or tank/hose enty location rather than engine?
The carb has never been off before and it was running fine until November, so the hoses were correct way around. Quite sure the feed hose wouldnt reach the other side anyway.

That’s one thing for the list of possible issues, I’d be stripping and cleaning the carb now

Checked the primer and it has a one way valve. The short/upper carb connection being the inlet and the long leg is outlet return to tank. The lower carb connection is inlet from tank - so it is supposed to suck fuel through the carb.
A bit more complicated than I imagined! A bit more to it than a motorcycle carb float bowl! All looked quite clean inside as I expected - its had little use and generally drain it if its not being used often.
The bottom peice seems to have a chamber and next filter to diaphram that seems to activate the valve? Im not sure what this does..
Any ideas, please?

Check the pipes are on the right way round, I've just 10 minutes ago fixed a 'broken' leaf blower that had the pipes mixed up.
See that little hole next to the inlet tract in the first picture that's where the pulse comes from that moves the diaphragm in and out pulling in the fuel.
Check it's not blocked and that the gasket hole lines up with it.

Re assemble leave the air filter off fill with clean correct fuel , get a bit of hardboard, leave the plug lead off , set the saw to wide throttle and pull over hard , get someone to push the hardboard over the carb inlet as you are half way pulled
You'll likely then draw any gungy thick oiled fuel through the drillings , jets & the all important fuel lift tube filter which often suffers from thickening oil if the machine has not been totally run dry & fully drained before storage . Do that a couple of times , remove the plug , pull over with throttle wide open to purge any over rich mixture in the crankcase refit the plug & a clean air filter & it should be up and running in seconds .
Those fuel bulbs .... check there is not a one way valve ball down in the plastic pipe at the lift pipe filter & that if there is that it is free and working .
