Yeah I know it is at the bottle banks etc... but the cynic part of me assumed with youts etc mixing colours as they feel like, it was easier for recyclers to not bother and just make more brown glass

Exactly this.
Yes glass should be recycled properly but sadly a lot of it isn't.
Same as some plastic can be but as it gets mixed up with all different sorts they can't do much with it.

Yes and we have caused it, or at least have changed the course of the destiny of the planet and the speed at which our ultimate demise will occur.

One cannot wreak so much change on an already inherently unstable system without dramatic and in this case cataclysmic consequences.

Way too many people with no natural predators that we can’t now fight off with the power to create worldwide change without any perception of the laws of unintended consequence have ensured our fate in the very near future.

The process is already underway. No stopping CO2 emissions or any dabbling like that will halt the now inevitable…… ever tried changing the direction of a supertanker with a piece of string?

most people in the “powerful” nations are not aware of the realities going on around them. You only have to watch the ridiculous weather warnings and the chaos that ensues from a windy day or a load of rain to realise people have become divorced from the realities of their true environment. That’s why they don’t see the changes which we, who have spent the last 60 years in agriculture do. It’s real, it’s happening.

I once read that “only a virus kills the host on which it depends”. That makes us the biggest virus out there.

Guardian had an article yesterday how Wind power was producing over 50% of Britain's electricity. They fail to mention last month we had 3 weeks where it was only producing 3%. Most countries who have pushed for renewable power have seen an actual increase in CO2 output. France is the opposite due to all its nuclear.

Britain is in rather a unique situation. Even London is further North than any city in Canada. People just don't realise how far North we really are. The only reason we don't get colder weather than Canada is the Gulf Stream. Climate change could easily cause that to shift and Britain could end up like Norway.

I've read long term wind studies and the average wind capacities are pretty decent, to be honest.

wind currently under 10% - it was as I said around 3% for several weeks in April- Germany was just as bad - people seem to think it is always windy somewhere and we can import the electricity when we need it. Not so. You can get a wind lul that covers all of Europe - and would you really trust the French to supply us when we need it?

We should as a species be limited to having less children for the next 100 years or so and anyone "popping them out" to get a free council house should be neutered with a pair of rusty shears or used drain rods depending on gender of course!

I love David Attenborough documentaries but the last few he's made on the climate changes happening and the total rape of the forests etc makes me want to turn it off as I know it won't change until there is a pandemic / comet that really does wipe us off the face of the planet.
If there is a divine being or aliens watching over us and what we're up to they must be shaking their heads in dispare!

Yes, we should all stop buying stuff from China, turn the heating down a notch or two and use less electricity. Then we could drive cars that suit our needs rather than projecting our success to our neighbours. Digging our gardens and growing veg would further reduce our food imports.

Germany is a classic example. Got rid of most of it's nuclear power because of Chernobyl. Then started buying more electricity from the Russians who opened another nuclear plant
Now Germany are burning lignite - filthy brown coal. And ripping up lovely old forests to opencast mine the stuff.
Germany's CO2 footprint has actually gone up.
Britain's has pretty much stayed the same despite spending billions and trebling our electric prices.
Whilst France exceeds all the CO2 targets due to it's nuclear power.

Yes but we MUST recycle to meet EU targets - funny how our local councils are still pushing for this.
The ONLY stuff that is fully recyclable is metal.
Even glass just gets crushed for sand blasting media. And to think of all the poor old dears who carefully rinse out their jam jars thinking they are going to be reused

There's not much that can't be recycled.

But there's not many willing to pay for it.

I couldn't resist - I just had to pull the XML data from BMRS myself, and run some stats on Excel.

You're right enough... if we based wind power forecasts on the month of April, it wouldn't get a look in!

On average, it does fairly well though. If we had more energy storage options, it would balance a lot better.

same for wave power, tide power, geothermal etc etc.

trapping more of the suns energy in solar cells inevitably causes warming of the earth…..

there is no such thing as energy without side effects.

this is not just about energy though -that’s one of many issues .

This is something I've thought about a lot. A wind turbine has to sap the wind power to do it's job so it will 100% be affecting the ecosystem around it. In coastal ares this mean could plants and animals will start occupying area they couldn't before. Less wind could mean less seed transfer or pollination due to insect movement.

In huge installations of solar panel the sun rays will not warm the ground and will potentially create it's own issues.

It's interesting that we having been seeing the resulting affects on rivers/sea due to hydro and dams and there are places in the world where dams are being removed.

Many years ago I read an article which was a study of the sustainability of "renewable energy"...1 windmill had no impact....if you build millions then it will have a big impact as it removes energy from the eco system.

But I guess much like cars we'll decide we need to do something once we've created a new problem to solve!
