Yep, distraction can lead to expensive hiccups. When I refurbished the cockpit of my vintage glider I realised that the Flap and retract levers were side by side with identical knobs . An hour in the workshop produced two totally different knobs that could not feel like each other. Looking around to identify which is which was not a good idea. landing is not a situation were a mistake could be easily forgiven.

I got a call from the duty officer at an active RAF base. Is Mooney G-AXXX based at your airfield? Yes. Well come and get it off our main runway, which it is blocking.
Pilot had unlocked the manual undercarriage lever instead of the flaps, while doing engine checks. They were next to each other, but not that similar. The nose wheel had retracted and lowered the nose onto the tarmac, turning the prop into two curly bits of scrap metal. He said that it had happened by itself, but after I pointed out the sequence of failure could only be 'finger trouble', he fessed up. Cue a new variable pitch prop, engine shock loading rebuild and new bits in the U/carriage. The RAF were nice about it and let me use their hanger for the engine removal and replacement. I then fitted locks to the undercarriage to hold it down and flew her home to fix the damage to the retraction system. Oddly enough, the aircraft next to me was a Canberra that had done a 'wheels up' landing.
Back to distracting screens...
Touch screen. There we are, you need to touch a spot on the screen, for that you need to aim your finger, for that you need to look where you’re aiming. Then watch to see it does what you expected, then, usually, stab at your choice. How many pedestrians could you have run over in that time? But that's my point: it's NOT the touchscreen that is the problem, its the design of the controls.
You would have the same issue whether manual controls or touchscreen?
The difference is that (potentially) you can get new firmware that improves the touchscreen interface.

Knobs work, been using them for years, don’t need to look, aim, non of that.
So like pushing a manual button, then?
Hmmm, saying something is worse than, at best something dubious is not especially a good thing. All the icons in the sprinter are blooming huge. To climate control bottom of the dash tactical buttons are far worse than the massive screen icons.
I can't remember what one is were without looking.
This thread is a load of tripe.

But we’re all different - I still say I could push, switch, move any amount of controls without looking at them. Can you say that about a touch screen? Maybe touch screens should be called “look and touch screens”?
If the answer is yes then touch screens are a good thing and pose no increased risk in use.
Then why bother replying ?All the icons in the sprinter are blooming huge. To climate control bottom of the dash tactical buttons are far worse than the massive screen icons.

Because welding stuff is boring. Then why bother replying ?
Because I don't understand the rational of it, handful on here have become those that hate all things modern or current. Then why bother replying ?
Exactly, and I would add: Proper switches and buttons, when pressed, move to a different position; the button is 'in' or 'out', plus the latch/spring detent causes a 'click' which you can feel with your fingertip, so you know for certain. No, nothing like it. You can feel a manual button, it's 3D. With a touch screen you have no idea where your finger has wandered. You could be pressing the windscreen for all the sensory feedback you're getting

Touchscreens cause accidents, and reduce the general standard of car control. That isn't 'hating all things modern', it's caring about road safety.Because I don't understand the rational of it, handful on here have become those that hate all things modern or current.
Dare I mention
Wind power, solar, Ev's, fusion, climate change, modern car diagnostic, modern diesels, modern cars at all and so on.
I find it really bizarre to intentionally set oneself up to not coexist with the future, by all means get stuck in the past but stop getting upset by it, it's a personal choice. Time only moves forward keep up or don't it's that simple.
You could argue that. My 30 year old cheap Peugeot's switches work perfectly, how many touch screens will be working perfectly, 30 years from now? Zero. One could argue they wear out quicker being mechanical
This reminds me of the old renaults of the 80 full of widgets cant think of the model now its that long agoYou could argue that. My 30 year old cheap Peugeot's switches work perfectly, how many touch screens will be working perfectly, 30 years from now? Zero.
I find it strange that using a mobile phone is illegal because has been proven to be a serious distraction, but as soon as its fixed in place it miraculously becomes perfectly safe ....Touchscreens cause accidents, and reduce the general standard of car control.
