This is an easy one to answer.
If you buy from a UK business (which, it turns out, we didn't in this case) then you are covered by the Sale of Goods Act 1979(*) which goes waaaaaaaaaaaay beyond what most people expect. In summary, in most cases you have six years to make a claim (five years in Scotland). SOGA supersedes any warranty or guarantee offered by the retailer or manufacturer.
If you don't buy from a UK business, then your rights are vastly reduced - that's where the credit card company, ebay, paypal, etc could potentially save the day.
(* SOGA only applies to private purchases, not businesses. It also doesn't apply to goods bought on hire-purchase)

Cheers, mate - appreciate it. While I'm here, can I also say how much I appreciate all the good words, support and advice offered here.
I know it's only a hunk of metal, but it was my xmas present from the Mrs and she's gutted that it's stuffed. Today's news from paypal has been a great weight off her mind.

Going by the number of negs on that seller's feedback I wouldn't have touched them with a rusty old Cortina, let alone a bargepole.
Also take into account that its now possible to get negatives withdrawn so they dont show up its likely they actually have many more than that. Its not always a massive problem especially if a seller does sell loads of gear, some people will still leave negative feedback just because they were annoyed. I know I had one guy leave us negative feedback even though we express shipped a replacement next day Saturday AM delivery, sent him a spare Mug wrap and told him he could also keep the working mugpress so he actually ended up with TWO working items.

Regarding this replacement machine that's coming from China, what about the possible customs charge?
I don't know enough to know if it will happen but I do know lot's of buyers get a letter from HMRC stating the item is being held and demanding a % before they forward to the customer.
I buy a lot from China but it's usually small low value items that don't appear to fall within the criteria for import/VAT charges

I am sure that eBay extended the claims period for christmas bought goods.
Re the customs, I had a replacement charge controller a few years back. The courier tried to bill me for it. I countered that it was a replacement for goods that had already been taxed / dutied. They dropped the charges.

ive just got the rtech p30c on ebay going for 220.00 has a damaged plasma torch but still works with it but advise is to get a new torch handle
