CV joint stuck!!

Just one of the worst things that happened to me ...I was 17 just passed my test (1st time in 1968) and I had a 1960 mini (bought for £30 a lot then!!) but it was falling to bits. Taking my new girlfriend out one night ...I turned sharp right at a junction and the passenger door fell off!! No seatbelts then so I only just managed to catch as she was falling out where the door should have been!! She wasn't my girlfriend for long

Yes it can technically be done!

I've no idea if an insurer "could" class the repair as a modification so it would not be for me...but each to their own as we can all have different views.

The one major insurance claim I had was 1 too many...wasn't even my fault but the stress aged me I think...wouldn't wish it on anyone!

The OP has a way out with std parts so fingers crossed that works out.

Yep that is the way - do one thing - one person a favour - do one thing "out the box" - to speed up a repair - or if the parts not availiable or too expensive for your punter.

If it goes wrong - and you got three years of hate in front of you!

I had a Metro, heading out to a country pub with the GF when the engine died, quick look under the bonnet and saw the king lead had fell off so we were soon back on our way, GF said "I thought we were going to be stuck there in the dark, do you want to find a secluded spot to stop in"

CV Joint arrived from Rome!! Took a week but got here safe and sound .. and it's the correct one for the Mazda. I've fitted it to the shaft in my workshop but looks as though Friday morning is the first chance I'll be able to fit it back on the car without getting soaked!! Hopefully it will all go back OK and she will be mobile again. I'll update when it's finished

Happy to pop in if you ever need a hand Gerry, you're a much better mechanic than I'll ever be but if it's whacking something very hard with a big hammer I'm an expert.

Still stuck!!! I'm trying a dry run to get the inner joint on but it will not go in! I haven't greased it yet (luckily) and I'm wondering if the 'outer' has to turn as the inner goes in?? The car is an auto and locked in park so the inner won't turn. Can't start the engine as I can't press the brake pedal (brake caliper is off, and I can't force the gear lever into neutral. If it does have to turn I'll have to put something in the caliper to allow me to press the brake/. Anyone help me on this ...please

Isn't there an override to shift the transmission without pressing the brake?, my car has a small button near the gearshift to release it without pressing the brake pedal.

Tri lobe joints should just slip in, you can rotate the shaf with your hands as the outer cv shouldn't be in anything as the trilobe needs to go in first

Update .. got the car into neutral and inner joint can turn but shaft still won't go in?? It came out easy enough ..is there some sort of 'knack' that I don't know about?? Spent 2 1/2 hours so far !! This was supposed to be the easy part

I cannot for the life of me see whats stopping it?? The shaft is not connected to anything on the CV end ..I've even loosened the whole strut to make sure I have a straight run in but it won't go .... i'm assuming it doesn't need all the grease just to go in for a trial run??

Has the diff dropped in the box?
Have a look through the oil seal, you might be able to lift it with a small pry bar very carefully or you'll damage the seal.

Chock the brake pads with wood or similar pr G cramp the pistons so you can depress the brake pedal.

In most cars they will change gear without needing the engine running. Like my automatic Mercs. Ignition on, press brake pedal move shifter and it should do into N or D etc without engine running. Caveat is that whilst it's in N you'll likely have to keep the ignition on and could drain battery if left too long.

I think the answer is the trilobe has been damaged through all the hammering and pushing and pulling trying to get the old cv joint off and the new (wrong) one on and and then off again..... I'll see if I can check with calipers but it seems the only answer cos it will not go back in!! I'm hoping I can get a new trilobe bearing otherwise I'm back to square one trying to get a whole shaft !! Idid get a new trilobe for my BMW so it's just a question of the part number - I hope. The other possiblity is the outer of the trilobe is damaged ...aaaarrrggghhh.

2 of the bearings on the tri lobe are not fully in on their shafts, these are not tight so should slide easily by hand. Check to make sure they all roll and slide.

Bert .. no they all slide in and out easily either one is ovalled or the outer is damaged ... I haven't got a circlip remover to see if the bearing is damaged .

I've checked the bearing with my digital caliper and they seem fine all measure the same ..one bearing does have a very small chip ..see photo ... although not good I can't see this stopping it going in ..but the inner joint may have worse damage and I don't think these are replaceable being part of the driveshaft ?? So I'm back up that creek again
