Defender rebuild - leave galvanised or paint?

Drilled out the old corroded a/c grill have a new stainless one to fit after paint:

Thought I would give the n/s inner wing a clean up, started ok:

then went down hill:

The double skinned edge that is normally covered by the sound deadening had some mud trapped, the galvanised inner wing has not survived well!

So a good second hand one, a plastic one out a puma or remove and weld......

Managed to source a good second hand galvanised one otherwise would have tried the plastic ones.

So new second hand one is pretty good just stripped it down and pressure washed it, minor surface rust to clean up and paint:

Have done a rough riveted repair of the near side wing after cutting back the powdery aluminium as the the rusted part is not available at a resonable price, I have used 3mm aluminium, will treat, prime and seal.:

Aye, was a bit damp. Garage full of machine tools and motorbikes, so accept outdoor Landy work.

We Scots are a hardy bunch, no such thing as bad weather, just being inappropriately dressed... Tend not to wear my kilt on the motorbikes.

It had a personalised plate on it but when I got home and looked through the paperwork it had the original reg starting with “S” for Scotland. It was really badly rotten at only a few years old, back door outer skin rusty under the window rubber, rust in the chassis hidden with black waxoyl. Stupidly I didn’t do the usual Defender corrosion checks as I figured at only a few years old then it would still be in good condition, not realising how bad Scottish salted roads were.

The one bonus was the plastic inner wings were better than yours!

I think it muck getting caught behind the lip of the sound deadening shields that causes the worst of the corrosion, especially salty muck, even with galvanisisng has only lasted 20 years on mine.

Parts back from paint today:

Doubt I will get a chance to start fitting them til tomorrow. Fitting new front springs and disks to my brothers van, can't complain as used the van to collect the parts.

@willie.macleod , sorry way behind getting the doors swapped out, will give you a shout when they are off.

Looks pretty good, got the rear arch extensions on. Will get a better idea tomorrow if weather ok.

Weather better today though not as much daylight as I would like, wings back on

greasy finger prints will wash off.

Grill rebuilt, new stainless section at bottom replacing corroded aluminium:

New genuine Defender sticker finishes it off.

The drivers side of my heated windscreen had recently given up, so on top of the requirement of a new screen rubber, I had a wee accident and paid my £75 insurance excess for autoglass to replace and fit the new genuined rubber I had bought. They cam on a hoorendous day of torrential rain and this is the first time I have managed to give it a proper check over. Looks like a corner has not seated, so they will be back:

wheels still away getting refinished.

A windscreen accident, had a few of those myself!

Minus 4 this morning, car was white with frost. Took an age just to refit the parts required to get the front panel on, even had to take the winch out.

I am too old to be outside working on Landy's in this weather or I am just becoming a wimp, a couple of hours today was enough.
