Why the all in one? Seperate one cheaper and not much more faff as you need to run an exhaust etc anyway.

First hour it ran produced a horrible smell, provoking a throbbing headache I've bought home.
Unpleasant smell to be expected for first few hours according to the manual. Doesn't mention headache.
Are you heating the space that the heater is in or is the outlet ducted to somewhere else? If somewhere else then duct the inlet to that space as well, that will prevent the heater from drawing fumes from the exhaust drain point. It should also heat the space quicker

Correct.That's the main, big, plastic, inlet - NOT the smaller, metal, inlet (the combustion inlet) - which should come from outside the heated space.
