Rear chassis and axle etc all back in hopefully last for however long I have the truck now



subframe for bed test fit



transit chassis narrower than hilux which I can live with only pain will be one shock mount is fouling it will need to notch frame to sit properly



front mount is in a good location



middle not so



have the fun now of welding lots of galv covered metal

Busy day now have a flat bed body in kit form , was originally a transit 8 x 7 ft body but after drilling many rivets now Hilux sized

This is my mates Hilux, flat bed is box with chequer plate floor and cut down Transit drop sides and tailgate

Nice ! mines going to be a bit more DIY as the bed i started with was 7ft X 10ft so cut down in both dimensions and i need to make the dropsides fit from a military truck

So far its cost me £50 but hopefully will look respectable from a distance

just need something more practical than the bed that was on it

My mate who I got the bed from is getting one of these for his Landcruiser pickup but it cost 5x as much as my whole pickup !

yeah no tie downs and the bed liner makes it almost impossible to fit them also from memory some pallets dont fit either

needed to notch the subframe for one of the shock mounts didnt want to but want it lower , I know its not great for the strength of the box section but it doesnt matter in this application as its bolted to chassis in 3 places.

this was the easiest way i could think of

Had to notch the subframe in a few places was expecting more issues welding it than did , I ground off the galv with a thin disc as i find it doesnt smear as much than with a flap disc

not sure wether to keep the existing angle iron support ( I cut it to save some weight) and weld some ears on or to weld one solid length of U channel on as that would no doubt be stronger

probably will be difficult to get a good weld this way

I have this bit of 4 x 2 U channel the right length



so it will sit about here , i can weld it in then cut the old brace out after should stop it twisting



any thoughts ? its about 100mm longer if I go this route but it ends up being the same length as the old bed so shouldnt look silly

Slow progress and welding galv is a pain but main subframe done and A frame almost there

I find the best way to get rid of the surface layer is a thin disc not flap disc as it doesnt smear it

Ive cut out the think section where the tipper ram went and have use 4x2 u channel , it needed to be 4" deep as the ally sides of the bed are 4" deep

My cut40 got trough it like a champ was 14mm at the thinnest



Mock up with an old trailer board from a very good friend of mine whos now very ill and I want to incorporate it (needs to be narrowed )

I will be re reading how you have treated your chassis as have mine to do at some stage , only surface rust , but it needs a thorough clean/treat and paint. the worst actually seems to be the cross bar on the tow bar , was powder coated which got cracked and subsequently really rusty now .

Mine wasnt too bad but everything that unbolted was either sandblasted or in the citric acid

powder coating unless done really well is best for cheap funiture

just got a new to me l200, solid but surface rust that needs treating , as its worth it.

I was able to sandblast the rear chassis once the bed was off but the front I will probably do with citric acid paste when the weathers better

Front A frame/headache board almost finished, got some Galv primer on now so just some flip up board stops to finish tomorrow and can get some paint on

almost there just got bed sides to make but I need it on the road would have made moving my new milling machine easier



mounts for the load eyes modified so they either bolt to side rails or crossmembers



I think the proportions look right any longer look silly shorter not much use
