Thanks John i'm not too good at cutting stuff.I'd go with 2 x horizontally, even if it means cutting for the switch. Having seen the quality of what you've done so far, I'm sure it'll look very professional.

yes that will doI suppose... it would mean a trip out to buy some timber. I have some off cuts of mdf and just received my hole saw how about making little spacers with this?
Would this work ok cut and screwed to a piece of mdf? It will save me buying two sheets of mdf.If I'm seeing the pic correctly, they could be the kind which is compressed wood-chippings/glue with a laminate facing - they're heavy for the size and I used a bit for fixing my small lathe to [now sold in preparation for the replacement's arrival ]
The place i usually buy from don't have a good selection, will have a drive about and find a better supplier.what about two pieces of 18mm marine ply glued together?
The wood is for under the metal the metal is only 3mm.why do u want to cover the metal top up it is metal isn't it
