Why do F1 cars - and all other racing and sports cars have bigger tyres at the rear then?
Remember when a car accelerates the weight transfer is to the rear - hence wider tyres at the back to provide more traction under acceleration.
Also when people are going for more economy they over inflate their tyres - which makes the contact area smaller - hence less friction and better economy.
And yet most people on here still say wider tyres don't offer more grip? Not logical.

Most people on here are saying for a family road car it makes not a jot of difference and it’s simply a non issue.

No, you’ve misunderstood me - in normal driving you aren’t going to notice the difference between some marginally skinnier “eco” tyres than any other slightly wider variety - other than you maybe get slightly better fuel consumption.

If your pushing it to the limit then maybe, but how many buy a family runaround for that? In 6 months of ownership I’ve literally never thought “I wish I didn’t have these eco tyres, this things a death trap”. They are literally just “tyres”.

I don’t even know why it was mentioned in the first place, it’s just not relevant.

I do drive rather hard all the time.
I do quite fancy a Tesla - I suspect I would soon rip the wheels off though!
Even when I had the Jag XFRS I used full acceleration every day. Strangely even as I get older I haven't slowed down
Tyres are important to me - those little patches of rubber are between you and life/death!

It's not a concern for the size of cable most of us work with, but I think it is for the massive conductors used in the national grid.
If I remember correctly the skin depth at 50Hz is around 8mm.

I stand corrected. Just looked it up and it's 9mm in copper, 12mm in aluminum, so definitely significant. I've got an offcut of some "flex" somewhere from a massive generator for a temporary supply, it's about 2" thick!

I think the EV's have to use skinnier tyres and every other weight-saving, friction-reducing, drag-reducing to get better stats & figures - to look as good as they can to attract ICE users to switch from what they know.

The ICE Mfrs up till now seem to focus a lot on aesthetics and image marketing, along with gadgets - knowing that many buyers would rather have a slightly thirstier car than one that does more mpg, but doesn't look trendy & cool.
The cost of living etc may well alter that.

I'm happy to critique EV's for many aspects - but to me the Eco narrower tyres are a common sense move over fashion - & would be happy to see them adopted on the ICE's.

I agree often the choice of wheels and tyres is down more to aesthetics than common sense.
However going to tyres that are too skinny isn't a good idea when it comes to grip either.
