2 holidays abroad for my family apparently has the same footprint as my yearly vehicle footprint.

I wonder what the carbon footprint of a affluent family is? Or s neo trendy climate protestor with a six bed country house and a new Tesla every year.
But us nobody’s who have a financial induced small footprint are demonised

Japan had similar problems and blaming air con. However heat pumps are very efficient and use very little. They know their problem is offline nuclear power stations where as we are just near maximum all the time.

The current peak time usage is insignificant to what it would be if everyone had an electric car fast charger. Even with load spread 100% evenly over 24hours, we only have a tiny percentage of the capacity needed for 40+ million cars.
Consider the grid struggles with an 8am or 6pm/advert break kettle surge.. a car is 10-20x the power use and 100x the duration (3 min vs 5+ hours).

Heat pumps have been 'a thing' in Australia for many years, cooling in summer, heating in winter.

There's a couple installed near where I live, here in Blighty, and hell they are noisy. A constant loud roar when they're on.

Remember the record player? Your favourite music played at home any time any volume, then came the tape player……… same as above
Then came the CD player and we bought all the same music again at another premium…..
Then the MP3 player came so let’s all change to that as that became another fashion thing obviously for your same favourite music …..
So how many formats do we go through to travel a mile or two? All these just waste the planets resources but it’s still someone’s ‘good’ idea so they’ve a job to go to….

I think he also has two or three others.

Vinyl has a much much lower fidelity than digital.

Digital has much greater dynamic range.


Arguably vinyl is more engaging. But the audio is nowhere near as good as digital it's physical impossible for it to be.

No-one thinks electric vehicles are slow outside of milk floats.

They are if you want to travel any kind of distance and/or carry passengers /c) cargo.
Even slower if you need to "refuel" mid-journey.
Even slower if there isn't a charge point available and/or you need to go significantly off-course to find one (and one that will accept your Milk Float)
Even slower if had to need to wait until the network has only certain periods when EV charging can take place.

To a much lesser degree, the same could be claimed for the ICE - the primary differences being that
- a working infrastructure & system is in place.
- the vehicles can be fully refuelled in minutes instead of hours (so a Station with 20 pumps might cope with 240 vehicles an hour, where a Station with 20 Charge Points won't average 20 EV's an hour).
- Any brand of ICE can use any Brand of Fuel Pump, where our idiot Govt permits EV Companies to install brand-specific EV Charge points.

With work, I've often been averaging 3000 miles a month, which takes around 100 hours driving. Round trip journeys can be 300 or even 400 miles on occasion, with the vehicle pretty well loaded.
If I was driving an EV I'd not get close to that, and I'd not get home at least half the time.
Add in the network being not up to the task of more Milk Floats, and I could be stranded for many hours at a time - and my work would become ludicrously expensive and probably non-viable.

EV's natural environment - is short distance journeys at slow speeds- really the urban environment (yup, places like London where there is already a vast electrical demand in terms of KW/H per square KM).

To say that "this hasnt been thought through" (by the public & the Govt. as a workable transport model) is a galactic understatement.

Just towing - just carrying weight too.
I watched a road test of a VW and a Ford EV Panel Van.
Range with a (not even full payload of its ICE counterparts) load - was at best 60-miles - and that wasn't tested in stop/start urban traffic or anywhere with significant hills!
About as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
Their only practical use - would be to have an ICE do most of the work, then transfer the load to the Milk Float, to complete the few miles into an Exclusion Zone to make the final delivery (thus doing so economically & saving the planet.... if you're retarded).

Until the grid and generating supplies are sorted out I think the hybrids make most sense, clean air for the inner cities and a sensible solution for motorway,towing or commercial use. It’s blatantly obvious the world is not ready for the ev and it probably won’t be for many years to come. The world shares the air we breathe and impact on climate, being the size we we are we shouldn’t be beating ourselves up over climate issues.

given current fuel costs i have recently sat down with my boss and our head boffin.... having looked at everything on the market under 70K (twice my real budget stretched to its limit) EV and Hybrid... the conclusion is stick with diesel for the time being

there is nothing that is more economical or practical on the market for at least 3 of us who travel any distance. In my case apart from the huge purchase/hire cost it would actually cost me slightly more to run a hybrid and probably ad 25% to my commute on EV

EV rightly belongs in cities, outside they are a pita, at least until the infrastructure and costs improve significantly

I have a very similar travel pattern in terms of number of miles. I've managed to reduce the number of journeys (largely due to fuel prices) but the distance I travel per journey has remained similar to yours. Just no way to do that with an EV

What brand specific charge points are there other than Tesla? I know Tesla has opened up some of their chargers to all vehicles

Like film vs digital photography, a digital photo is technically "better" in every way, but people still love the feel of film.

Personally I'll stick with my phone camera, and Spotify streaming.
