Hi all long day not fiscal just mentally draining. The new rocker arm is in and working the most important part of the job was to make sure the opening for the slider part was perfectly snug. The slider part (Top Die) is some sort of hard metal not bronze I gave it the file test and it didn't mark it.

That's go-getting! Colour me impressed.

Hi all final update on this shaper repair today I took off the sharp edges and added the scale to the rocking bar, in all the haste this morning I forgot to take a picture till it was fitted but I recon you will get the jist.

Looks like a good start. What steel are forks made from ? Bet @pressbrake1 knows.

I believe some are made from Low carbon steel with boron.

Hello, I’m looking at a 10M that’s available to purchase. It doesn’t have a vise or a tool holder. A swivel machine vise is hopefully easy enough to source but the tool holder could be difficult / impossible to find. Do you have any ideas on sources? Thanks, Richie

You might have to make the toolpost. If you put 'lantern tool post' into Google and look at the images, you see the concept. A shaper one is simpler than a lathe one as you only need the post and securing bolt - the dished washer and curved packer are not required.

This is just about fabricobblable without a lathe: pick your barstock to suit the hole size in the clapper, weld a washer to the end of it to form the flange, drill and tap other end freehand. Make wooden V-block and drill and file the slot in it.

I'd say you could make a tool holder easy enough if you have access to a milling machine.

99% of the time you won't need a swivel vice. Mine came with a 4" swivel vice that was a bit small to hold some of the parts so I bought a 6" vice without swivel that does most of the work.
Having said that, the main use for my shaper now, using a shop made toolpost, is to cut internal keyways.

The toolpost is easy enough to make if you've got access to a lathe and a mill.

Thanks for that Rob, I appreciate it. I have a fixed 8” machine vise on my radial arm drill so I can borrow that if it fits the bed.
I’ve just bought a Harrison 140 (not yet collected) and I already have an Elliot U1 which I haven’t installed so I should be good to make the toolpost.
If you can share a few dimensions and pics of the original Elliott toolpost some time I’d appreciate it.
Even though it mightn’t get a lot of use, I think it’s worth picking up the 10M while it’s available. It’s en route on my lathe pick up.

Look for a vise that has a locating hole underneath it, then a simple bush to fit this and a bolt into the centre T slot and you almost have a swivel vise. No degree markings but a lot lower than a swivel one, and you need all the room you can get.

A single bolt holds it OK in line and 90 deg, but hold downs have to be used for other angles

My shaper's an Alba and the vise I was kindly given (with a bent lead screw, easy fix) is a Victoria, the same as the one shown in their sales catalogue, cool stuff!

I'll measure up the toolpost tomorrow and post the dimensions. I'll also post the details of the keyway slotting toolpost I made. This does get used, as it avoids abusing the mill quill to cut internal keyways.

BTW, if you're going to cut internal keyslots, you'll need to lock the clapper. This dog pointed locking screw is my mod, not standard:

As for the size of vice that's appropriate for a 10M, a 4 1/2" swivel vice:

Have you any more info on setting up and using the key slotting attachmnt?
It's probably obvious and I'm being thick, but I am new to this machining malarky.

Also have you a photo of the handle for the swivel vice?
I have something similar on my Invicta Type 1M but it came with a bit of square tube and flat bar for a handle and I fancy fabricating something more in keeping.

I’m based in Ireland and travelling across with a plant trailer to collect a Harrison 140 lathe and a 2.5m x 1.2m surface table next weekend. There’s room on board for one more item and I think if I leave the 10M behind I’ll be kicking myself afterwards.

I am confused. You are asking for pictures of the toolholder, but the machine in your picture has the toolholder firmly present.

If the seller has told you the toolholder is missing, s/he is referring to a different part, so it might be worth doing some digging.

If you can get it for £300, good luck. Looking at its condition, £400 is undervaluing it. There are people who would give you north of £50 for the light on it.

It is good to try to get the cranking handle with it (fits cross feed, table height and slide rotation) as well as the square wrench that fits the toolpost bolt. Check the autofeed gear to make sure none of the teeth are sheared off.
