That's looking great, really smart.I grabbed a selection of grinders with wire wheels and flap discs and cleaned all the rust and old paint off.

Some of the very rough bits on the casting were slightly smoothed out with a flap disc.
I hate applying filler, I hate sanding filler and I hate the dust, therefore I decided that I am not going to use any filler and just paint the tailstock.
I brushed some paragon zinc primer onto the tailstock.

I am never happy with the finish when I brush paint. I should have just got the compressor and spray gun out but it was too late now.
The handwheel I just masked up and sprayed with an etch primer rattle can.

I used Paragon Meddings Grey paint for the top coat - this time I sprayed it.

The rest of the lathe will have to wait until summer when I have identified a couple of weeks that I can spend to paint/service/fix the lathe up.
Regarding paint removal, I often do the same and use wire wheels on a grinder, but I've also found a scraper can work well.
