Are there any risks to the user, the contents or the cleaner unit using a Citric Solution in it?

It has been done (both heat and agitation) and reported successful. In the long term, I would be concerned about the effect of the acid on the stainless of the USC, but you could mitigate that and save on acid solution by putting the pieces and acid in a ziplock bag surrounding with hot water.

I do similar (pyrex dish) now to save carb cleaner - good idea that to do same with Citric

So when the part is removed from evaporust, what further work needs to be done.

My go-to is electrolysis but after removal from the tank I still wire brush or pressure wash (or both) the part. I also spray with WD40 to stop flash rusting or brush with phosphoric acid, so still a process after removal from the tank.

A good part of the electrolysis treatment is it does not affect clean steel and as such have used it on stub axles without worry of the clean bearing surfaces being effected - how does evaporust work on parts like that?

Another good thing with electrolysis is I have used a 200ltr drum to clean a land rover axle case (one end at a time) so that would require a significant volume of liquid.

It will be interesting to hear the full cleaning process of the evaporust, but that part certainly does look nice and clean.

There is very little on the evaporust front.

The part should not have oil or grease on it. Otherwise just drop it in and leave it in the solution.

Remove and I washed the part in utility sink and dried thoroughly with compressed air. That was it. No wire brushing etc required at all the rust is completely gone and the fluid is odourless kind of like diesel consistency.

When I use Evaporust on collets I just wash in acetone and leave to air dry ( acetone evaporates ), on clock arbors they always go in ultrasonic tank after to clean brass wheels then rinse in hot water rinse in isopropyl to displace water and hot air dry ( pinched wife’s hair drier ) don tell her.

What is a good product for keeping rust off tools etc? I don't mean spraying down with wd40 etc that is not ideal when storing tools in pouches or tool boxes.

Is there wax type product that works well to avoid flash rusting for winter months etc?

A wipe with ACF50 is very effective at stopping rust - great on tools or motorbikes. WD40 is pretty useless at stopping rusting. The ACF50 was developed for the aircraft industry - ACF - Anti Corrosion Fluid.

Evaporust is the only product I've used where it looks like an advertisement. It really does come out of the pot with the rust gone. I love the stuff! I'm certain it's alkaline rather than neutral though, as it has that slimy texture when dipping hands in to get the bits out.

That's probably true of any chemical, including things like isopropyl alcohol. Very much think it would be true of Evaporust. There has to be some chemical reactivity for rust removers to work. Many foods and drinks contain some citric.

Citrus fruits, for example? Oranges, lemons, grapefruit, limes, etc. many foodstuffs also contain buffer- compounds which will limit the pH to a more palatable value.

A 5 degree rise in temperature generally increases the rate of any chemical reactions. A basic GCSE level (although many would overlook the effect of a small rise in temperature). Think here, plant growth, fermentation rates, etc, etc.

I looked at the Evapo-rust safety data sheet; it must be the most secretive one I've ever seen. It looks like it consists of 20% of something in water. A thought occurs to me that if one problem with citric is that after taking off the rust, it can do slight corrosion, maybe a teaspoon full of central heating corrosion inhibitor could be mixed in with it?

Those brackets do look well clean after the Evaporust!

I believe that this is a common aqueous solution.

Alkali does not react with metal oxides

I only use hydrochloric acid outside, in winter I have used a pair of stacked euro containers bottom one with hot water and the top with the acid, being plastic and the water not being able to evaporate it stayed warm a long time.

I have seen claims that it is Phytic acid but no evidence to support this.

Really? There goes my GCSE chemistry. The reaction is thus dependent entirely on pH rather than some active ingredient separate from the pH of the liquid as a whole, like paint in an emulsion?

There are numerous commercial products on the market to achieve all kinds of metal finished. The problem is that they are intened for industrial use so minimum quantity may be 25 litres. To make your own, Mr Google may be you friend.

A cup boiler is handy for keeping the citric acid solution hot. They are getting harder to get hold of.

For small items a couple of hours on a radiator.

Then a wire brush.

It wont touch chrome.

That's the exact use I have planned too. I have a bucket of Mercedes tools to de rust then get silver zinc plated locally.

How much citric acid powder do you use per litre of water etc?
