Its not the engine thats bad, its normally the french electrics that lets them down! I'm guessing that Nissan either use their own loom or spec a better quality loom as there are fewer problems when the engine is fitted to a Nissan vs a Renault.

My mate is a driving instructor, his fiesta went bang at 100k the replacement bill was £4000 someone's making good money.

That was 'warranty rates' - i.e. what Ford sold it to us at, so we could bill it back to them... I'm sure it makes sense to some accountant somewhere... I haven't a clue what the retail rate is as it's a while since I worked there and at the time we were only doing warranty repairs on them.
Lots of manufacturers have similar systems where warranty parts are significantly cheaper (same goes for labour rates) than they would be for retail, it also depends if the engine is fully dressed or not (fully dressed is as it would be presented at the build line, some manufacturers only sell replacement engines that way, e.g. Mercedes-Benz, some only sell them with the bare minimum fitted, e.g. PSA) Clearly there is more labour involved in exchanging parts over together with a whole host of gaskets & seals, that is generally cheaper than a fully dressed engine + remove/install labour.

It'll be a Renault engine harness, the same as the variants fitted to Mercs. It'd be a proper pain to fit an engine harness on receipt of a fully assembled engine.
Ah, the good old ford ecoboom engines..... my pal is currently changing his second one of those engine this week (as in, he did one yesterday morning (monday), and started his second yesterday afternoon....... he does NOT work at an engine swap garage or anything like that, just a normal, middle of the road service shop..... That should give you some idea of how common the failure on these is......
Theyre an engine that makes the k series (rover one, not the honda version) look reliable.... at least when those went, it was just a headgasket to rebuild....... I know for a long time ford were replacing them under warrantee, but i gather they stopped that a while back. They did a MASSIVE recall on the transits to try and stop those all going bang as well it seems.....

Mate across the road has a nearly new Transit connect. It's not wonderful to say the least . It's been in and out of the dealership since he got it with all sorts of stupid things (who thought an app to check things was a good idea). Tracker doesn't track, adblue level isn't detected, app won't connect and a list of other stuff. It does drive though.

Just to note, the later hybrid eco-boost engines had the wet timing belt replaced with a chain. They still use a smaller wet belt to just drive the oil pump though.
Is the sequence of events that leads to engine failure well understood? I've heard the failure is caused by low coolant level, leading to the engine overheating. Simply checking the coolant level, e.g. when topping up the screenwash, would have stopped that happening. Seems some people don't do the simple checks any more.

In youtube videos ive seen of these it appears fragments of the belt block the oil pick up strainer leading to oil starvation with predictable results

Years ago I had a 3 cyl corsa as a courtesy car, it was such a gutless rough bag of crap that when I went to fil it up I found I could not get the diesel nozzle in the filler, bonnet up to realise it was a petrol!Sorry mate, no three cylinder engine sounds OK (especially the Smart/Renault engine) - but even worse are the 4 pot with cylinder deactivation, when I was at an Audi dealer, every week we had an A1 or A3 in with a 'misfire'.... I haven't driven any three-potter further than absolutely necessary to give an opinion on the quality of the powertrain or otherwise

Why the hell would you immerse a timing belt in oil ?
Why the hell would you have the oil pump running of a vee belt in the engine ?
Both of these designed to last the life of the engine ?
More importantly, why would you buy a Ford ?

was allways a ford man old ford not the new krap the longest i had a van 10 years and 115 thousand miles was a vauxhall combo all it ever got was oil changes and filter by me pads and disks and tires ohh and a knacked wiper motor

I had 3 Ford Van's on my last firm, two Fiestas and a Courier, both Fiestas munched the gearboxes in spectacular fashion at less than 100k and the Courier did in the clutch at 85K.
I'd say they were pretty good considering my erm unique driving style when the tosser managers gave me grief
They were decent enough vans although the Fiesta was uncomfortable to say the least.
