i'd just use barbecue spray from b&q if you want heat proof, but pretty much any car spray paint will do, its not going to get that hot around the outside and if you think about it you can fry an egg on a car bonnet on a hot day. My old cast iron forge was painted with green hammerite.
Where did you source fire bricks from in the end and how much?
A forge is on my long term project list but don't want the expense of buying high temp refactory cement.
